IDEMIA, the French identity technology firm Sherrill blamed this week, pushed back on the governor\u2019s account in a statement to the New York Post. Spokesperson Lisa Shoemaker confirmed Sherrill\u2019s statement that all 6,600 people answered \u201cYes\u201d to registering and \u201cNo\u201d to being a citizen \u2014 which should have rendered them ineligible for the voter rolls \u2014 but disputed the governor\u2019s claim that a \u201cglitch\u201d allowed them to be registered. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe 6,600 records submitted to the [Motor Vehicle Commission] and Division of Elections contained correct information according to the design specifications as set out by the state,\u201d she told the Post, adding that the responses were \u201crecorded correctly and always available.\u201d <\/p>\n

Shoemaker also told the outlet that \u201cat no point was a noncitizen ever marked as a citizen in the database\u201d and that the company \u201cdoes not control or manage voter enrollment,\u201d suggesting that the fault lies elsewhere. Sherrill told reporters Tuesday that a serious software error in the state\u2019s Motor Vehicle System caused the mistake, which she said led to roughly 400 noncitizens casting ballots, according to the New Jersey Monitor. The error ran from June 2023 to June 2024 under her predecessor, Democrat Phil Murphy, and the state found no evidence any election was swayed, the Monitor reported.<\/p>\n

A New Jersey official rejected IDEMIA\u2019s version when reached by the Post. \u201cAnytime somebody answers \u2018no\u2019 to the citizenship question, that record should not be transmitted to the Division of Elections,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon gave the state five business days to hand over the names, birth dates, nationalities and addresses of the 6,600 registrants, plus voting records for the 400 who cast ballots, Fox News reported. Dhillon tied the demand to an existing federal suit over the state\u2019s voter database, according to Fox.<\/p>\n

Sherrill\u2019s camp cast the probe as political. \u201cThe Trump administration has a long history of weaponizing the Justice Department for political purposes and attempting to overturn election results,\u201d spokesperson Sean Higgins told the Post.<\/p>\n

Republican New Jersey Rep. Josh Gottheimer has asked the General Services Administration and the Office of Management and Budget for a government-wide audit of every federal contract tied to IDEMIA, telling GSA\u2019s Edward Forst and OMB\u2019s Russ Vought that the failure raises national concerns, the New Jersey Globe reported. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe deeper problem is national,\u201d Gottheimer said. White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson pointed to the case as reason to pass the SAVE Act, while state Republicans called for an end to automatic voter registration at DMVs, according to the Monitor.<\/p>\n
