Carly Simon revealed she has been privately battling Parkinson\u2019s disease and cancer during her years-long absence from the public eye.<\/p>

She told fans that as she adjusted to life with Parkinson\u2019s disease, she was diagnosed with a form of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, and underwent treatment. In a statement issued July 27 to People, Simon explained that she has needed time to grapple with her health battle, but is making a return with her first original album in 18 years, \u201cComes in Waves,\u201d slated for release Aug. 14.<\/p>

\u201cSo many people have written to me, kindly wondering about my relative silence, asking how I am and what I have been doing. The truth is, I\u2019ve been learning how to live with Parkinson\u2019s disease,\u201d Simon said.<\/p>

\u201cIt has taken me some time to understand the diagnosis, to adjust to it, and to decide how much I wanted to say about it publicly.\u201d<\/p>

She went on to say that, \u201cParkinson\u2019s is different for everyone, and it can be unpredictable. Some days I\u2019m so tired I can\u2019t get the day moving at all. On others, it gives me a little more room to move, think, work, and feel like myself,\u201d according to People.<\/p>

Simon told fans she suffered from arthritis in both knees and one hip, and had all three joints replaced.<\/p>

\u201cOut with the old and in with delicate bouquets of metal and plastic.,\u201d she said. <\/p>

The famous singer told fans that her mobility worsened, even after the surgeries. <\/p>

\u201cOverstuffed furniture became my enemy. Once seated, I could feel as though I had been swallowed by the chair and might remain there permanently, like a guest who had badly overstayed her welcome,\u201d she said.<\/p>

She was diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s disease soon after she began requiring assistance to walk. <\/p>

\u201cThere is no tidy or predictable schedule to the illness,\u201d Simon said, according to People. \u201cIt does not consult my calendar before deciding what kind of day I am going to have.\u201d<\/p>

Simon told fans that she experienced more than just physical symptoms. <\/p>

\u201cIt can bring anxiety, depression, exhaustion, and apathy,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is as though the part of the brain that sends out invitations to participate in life has temporarily misplaced the guest list.\u201d<\/p>

Simon opened up about the second diagnosis that shook up her world.<\/p>

\u201cDuring this same period, I was also treated for basal cell carcinoma on my face. The cancer was removed, but the surgery affected my appearance and made me more self-conscious about being seen in public,\u201d she said. <\/p>

Simon told fans she withdrew from the public sphere, \u201cBut I have not stopped living, and I have not stopped working,\u201d according to People. <\/p>

The star thanked fans for their undying support before noting that she has embraced her health challenges and remains optimistic about the future. <\/p>

\u201cThese days I move more slowly, I lean on others more than I once did, and I have learned to accept that every day will look a little different,\u201d she said, according to People. \u201cBut I am still very much here.\u201d<\/p>
