A career criminal who allegedly shot and killed the 12-year-old son of a former New York Police Department (NYPD) officer has been charged with second-degree murder.<\/p>\n

William Ferrer, 45, has also been charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree manslaughter, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to an arrest affidavit referenced by CBS News New York. The alleged shooting occurred around 5:00 p.m. Saturday in the Mount Eden section of the Bronx, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n

Jacob Freytes, nicknamed \u201cKai,\u201d was shot in the chest during the incident and fled to a bodega on Elliot Place to seek help, according to surveillance video. In the surveillance video, a man appears to open fire when the 12-year-old clutches his chest and runs into the store, the New York Post reported.<\/p>\n

Freytes was playing baseball with his friend Marlyn Rosario when he went to the bodega to buy a ball, Rosario told CBS News New York.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started crying. Me and Kai [Jacob] had been best friends. He was a nice kid; he didn\u2019t deserve that,\u201d Rosario said.<\/p>\n
