Massachusetts Democrats recently sponsored a Senate bill creating a \u201cpermanent\u201d government commission \u201con the status of people who practice Islam,\u201d which would communicate with the government on how legislation affects Muslims and recommend Muslims for government positions. <\/p>\n

The Senate committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight reported the bill, No. 2134 \u201cfavorably\u201d and referred it to the Joint Committee on Rules, which referred it to the committee on Senate Ways and Means. That committee consists of a majority of democrats. <\/p>\n

The commission proposed by the bill would accomplish eight different tasks, including serving as a liaison between the Muslim American community and the government, researching \u201cIslamophobia,\u201d recommending Muslim Americans for positions in the government and undertaking \u201cactivities designed to enable the commonwealth to realize the full benefit of the skills, talents and cultural heritage of American Muslims.\u201d (RELATED: Democrat Responds To Reporter\u2019s Question About Teen Being Found Shot Dead At Husband\u2019s Property)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe commission shall \u2026 [e]valuate the commonwealth\u2019s hate crime statutes and whether any amendments would better protect residents from Islamophobia and other similar forms of hatred,\u201d the bill says. <\/p>\n

The commission would consist of 11 people: two people appointed by the governor, one by the attorney general, one by the speaker of the House of Representatives, one by the president of the senate, two by the state secretary, two by the senate chair of the Massachusetts general court\u2019s joint committee on racial equity, civil rights and inclusion, and two by the house chair of the same committee. Each member would serve for three years. <\/p>\n

\u201cMembers of the commissions shall reside in the commonwealth who have demonstrated a commitment to the Muslim American community,\u201d the bill reads. <\/p>\n

Critics of the bill on X say it would unjustly discriminative against other religions by prioritizing Muslims.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Massachusetts courts heard a case to uphold a lower court\u2019s ruling that blocked the Quincy, Massachusetts mayor from building ten-foot-tall statues of Saint Michael the Archangel and Saint Florian, Catholic religious icons, in front of his city. <\/p>\n

The Norfolk Superior Court judge had ruled in October that the action violated Article 3 of the Massachusetts Declaration of Rights, which states, \u201call religious sects and denominations \u2026 shall be equally under the protection of the law; and no subordination of any one sect or denomination to another shall ever be established by law.\u201d<\/p>\n
