Moss, a Jewish LGBTQ state senator, is seeking to become Michigan\u2019s next congressman after defeating attorney Aisha Farooqi in the Aug. 4 Democratic primary for the seat being vacated by Michigan Democrat Rep. Haley Stevens, who is running for the U.S. Senate. Moss currently serves as president pro tempore of the Michigan Senate and is serving his second term in the chamber. The audio was originally posted to X on July 21 by Farooqi, Moss\u2019s primary opponent. In the recording, Moss is alleged to say that the \u201centire purpose\u201d of his campaign is to ensure continued U.S. support for Israel and that \u201cAmerica is not our homeland.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI, of course, feel a natural inclination for my own people, and of course, Israel is very important to us as a community,\u201d Moss allegedly says. \u201cI would say that the entire purpose of my campaign is to make sure America continues to support Israel. You know, I don\u2019t think\u2014I don\u2019t think it\u2019s wrong for Jews in America to want to put Israel first. America is not our homeland. We have been victims of antisemitism here.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a response to an inquiry posed by the Daily Caller, Moss dismissed the recording as \u201cmanipulated and unsourced,\u201d arguing that it attributes statements to him that he \u201cnever did or never would say\u201d and was intended to portray him as anti-American. He also accused his critics of promoting \u201coffensive tropes and lies,\u201d including what he called the \u201clie of dual loyalty\u201d targeting Jewish Americans.<\/p>\n

Moss further wrote he is focused on protecting voting rights and democracy, opposing the Trump administration and building an America \u201cwhere everyone is welcome and can thrive.\u201d He also pointed to priorities including dismantling U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), addressing what he described as its cruelty, and lowering healthcare costs. \u201cI\u2019m a proud Michigander. I was born in Detroit. I grew up in Oakland County. I won\u2019t stand for people using lies to diminish my American story,\u201d Moss said.<\/p>\n

He also described the current political environment as a \u201cdangerous era of disinformation,\u201d arguing that false claims should not be amplified simply because they reinforce someone\u2019s political beliefs. \u201cCirculating a lie because it affirms your bias or belief is equally bad whether it comes from the left or the right,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all have a choice not to spread fabricated images, videos, and audios about candidates and campaigns,\u201d Moss continued. \u201cWe all have a role in stopping the erosion of our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Responding to Moss\u2019s comments, Republican Troy, Michigan, Mayor Ethan Baker, the GOP candidate in the race, said the state senator should have the opportunity to explain what he meant in the hot-mic recording.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst, I think it makes sense for State Sen. Moss to have the opportunity to explain what he meant in his hot-mic statement. That said, I don\u2019t believe someone who is running for U.S. Congress should limit their sole purpose to one issue, because that\u2019s not how to best represent all people and voices in the district,\u201d Baker told the Caller.
