A top official in the Department of Health and Human Services accused an advocacy group with ties to multiple corporations that produce processed foods of helping attack Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.\u2019s pro-organic foods pitch.<\/p>\n

Secretary Kennedy, who promised special attention to the U.S. food supply, dismissed criticism of the Department of Health and Human Services\u2019s (HHS) handling of the cyclospora outbreak as \u201cinvalid\u201d and not linked to reductions in force at the agency, Politico reported<\/span> Saturday. Singling out a number of critics, HHS senior adviser Calley Means went on to allege in an X post that same day that the Alliance to Stop Foodborne Illness (STOP) is \u201ca fake \u2018food borne illness advocacy\u2019 group [funded] to give quotes to media attacking RFK\u2019s \u2018real food\u2019 pitch and argue ultraprocessed food is safer.\u201d (RELATED: America\u2019s Biggest Beverage Companies Take A Step In MAHA\u2019s Direction)<\/strong><\/p>\n

STOP, HHS, and Means did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation\u2019s requests for comment.<\/p>\n

Cyclospora is a parasite which can cause cyclosporiasis \u2014 which is characterized by severe diarrhea \u2014 in its hosts. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported over 10,000 domestic laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis \u2014 linked to certain supplies of contaminated iceberg lettuce \u2014 since May 1, 2026, in addition to another 12,000 reports which have not been fully evaluated.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do have the [cyclospora] outbreak under control,\u201d Kennedy said during a July 21 press conference. \u201cWe\u2019ve identified the source of the outbreak. We and the companies that are involved have implemented a recall.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The outbreak appears to be a test of Kennedy\u2019s emphasis on turning the public\u2019s diet away from artifical and processed foods. Kennedy likewise announced the launch \u201cThe Real Food Show\u201d on July 30, aimed at \u201cempower[ing] families to make healthy eating practical, approachable, and affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we have outbreaks like this one and then a few months later, it\u2019s another one, that totally undermines the message,\u201d STOP CEO Sandra Eskin told Politico.<\/p>\n

President Joe Biden appointed Eskin as the Department of Agriculture\u2019s deputy under secretary for food safety in March 2021.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

STOP was founded in 1994 to increase awareness of foodborne illnesses after a 1993 E. coli outbreak caused by undercooked fast food hit the West Coast, according to the nonprofit\u2019s website. <\/p>\n

Many of the nonprofit\u2019s partners include food and beverage industry titans such as Hershey, Kellogg, Mars, Nestl\u00e9, and PepsiCo. STOP, however, also includes partners such as Amazon, Costco, and Wegmans.<\/p>\n

An estimated 53% of Americans reported having \u201csome\u201d or \u201ca lot\u201d of confidence in the Food and Drug Administration\u2019s handling of the outbreak, according to a CBS News poll published July 26.<\/p>\n
