The comedian delivered the argument Friday in the closing \u201cNew Rule\u201d segment of his HBO show \u201cReal Time.\u201d Maher framed immigration as the country\u2019s defining political fight and faulted both parties for going too far. He described his own stance as pro-immigration, saying the United States has long thrived by drawing talented people from abroad and turning them into Americans.<\/p>\n

Newcomers can keep their food, their language at home, and their religious holidays, he said. What they cannot reject, in his telling, is the country\u2019s foundational principles. \u201cBut you have to answer one question: Do you like Western civilization?
