An X post went viral Sunday that captured the modern insanity of youth sports and how families are taking it way too far \u2014<\/strong> and way too seriously\u2014<\/strong>with kids who haven\u2019t even hit puberty yet. <\/p>\n

The photo shows a family celebrating their son\u2019s travel baseball \u201cjourney\u201d and his participation in an \u201celite,\u201d seven-and-under team. It appears they were at a \u201csigning ceremony,\u201d which is typically reserved for high school athletes declaring to play for a big D-1 team, D-1 players changing programs, and, of course, college athletes joining a professional team. One X user hilariously remarked that the young American is going to get \u201cabsolutely smoked by a Dominican kid who is currently hitting an entire bag of dried red beans with a broomstick.\u201d <\/p>\n

There seem to be three big issues turning youth sports, once a fun and healthy outlet for kids, into a weird, over-the-top industry that has nothing to do with sports or the well-being of kids. <\/p>\n

The first is that youth sports is now massively lucrative. There are so many opportunities to make money, with billions of dollars sloshing around, that Wall Street private equity firms are already capitalizing. Even parents who aren\u2019t super wealthy are willing to spend an arm and a leg for their kids to participate on a team, and sometimes they do not have much of a choice. Sports equipment has gotten ridiculously expensive, and some youth leagues are banning parents from taking photos during the game so they can charge them later for professionally-taken pictures and videos. <\/p>\n

The second problem is social media. Now that you can compare yourself to people who are richer and more talented than you, you feel a constant need to compete and keep up with others. In one soccer league, it\u2019s now required for players to have social media pages to showcase their skills. Playing on a boring, old-fashioned recreation league is now perceived as gauche. The cool kids and the cool families are traveling 1,000 miles away so their kids can compete in a tournament with other cool kids and cool families. They are also posting about it on social media, instilling mass FOMO in those who aren\u2019t. <\/p>\n

And the third problem is the parents themselves. We all know those parents who were failed athletes in their youth, so they live vicariously through the athletic successes of their kids. They are also delusional and believe their kids are the next LeBron James or Shohei Ohtani. Of course, this is rarely <\/em>the case. But if you believe your kid is a generational phenom, there is no amount of money you wouldn\u2019t spend to make his or her path to greatness a reality. <\/p>\n

All in all, this is a sad trend to witness. For most Americans, youth sports was not really about the sport itself; it was about getting your kid outdoors, in a social environment, where they can have fun and make friends. Most kids won\u2019t go on to be great athletes, and that\u2019s totally fine. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

But now that youth sports has turned into a billionaire-dollar industry filled with narcissistic, status-obsessed parents, the days of America\u2019s classic Little League, where all kids can participate regardless of skill level, might be coming to an end. <\/p>\n
