Garriott, who is challenging incumbent Republican Iowa Rep. The ad features images of Garriott with her family and two sons as she emphasizes her role as a mother and public school parent. The ad also features images of Nunn while a voice-over of Garriott claims her record is being taken out of context. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a mom with two kids in Iowa public schools. Their education and safety literally keep me up at night, so when my opponent cherry-picks and twists my record, I have to set the record straight,\u201d Garriott stated.<\/p>\n

She then addresses transgender issues and parental rights, stating, \u201cI\u2019m Sarah Trone Garriott, and I oppose letting men in women\u2019s locker rooms and let parents, not politicians, make decisions for their kids. I approve this message because politicians have become too extreme on these issues and I\u2019ll always put kids and families first.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

However, Garriott\u2019s record as an Iowa state senator shows she previously voted against legislation addressing access to school restrooms and changing areas. (RELATED: Democratic Candidate Sarah Garriott Complains Iowa Leaders Are Too White, Too Christian, Too Male)<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2023, Garriott voted against a bill that would prohibit \u201cpersons from entering single and multiple occupancy restrooms or changing areas and other facilities in elementary and secondary schools that do not correspond with the person\u2019s biological sex and including effective date provisions,\u201d according to a Legiscan report.<\/p>\n

Garriott was among the 16 state senators who voted against the legislation, which ultimately passed in March 2023.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Iowa Democrat also voted against legislation addressing gender transition procedures for minors, as well as a measure that would have required school and college sports teams to be designated based on biological sex.<\/p>\n

That same year, Garriott voted against legislation that would have prohibited gender transition procedures for minors while establishing provisions for the law\u2019s implementation and effective date.
