The House of Representatives <\/span>voted<\/span> 216 to 204 to reject the amended legislation Thursday. Minority Whip Katherine Clark may have played a hand in gathering opposition to the bill. Bloomberg Government\u2019s Rachel Schilke noted Thursday that Clark was talking to the bill\u2019s sponsor, Republican New York Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, and Majority House Leader Steve Scalise. Clark says she is the \u201cmother of a transgender daughter,\u201d and has previously expressed her \u201csolidarity\u201d with transgender-identified Americans.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Malliotakis <\/span>introduced<\/span> the bill February 2025. The Committee on House Administration passed Malliotakis\u2019 legislation in March.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[<\/span>D]espite having more than 230 bipartisan cosponsors and the support of President Trump, this legislation passed out of Committee (7-4) along party lines, with the Democrats opposing it, simply because language was added via amendment by [Republican Illinois] Rep. Mary Miller to ensure the museum exhibits only biological women,\u201d reads a March press release from Malliotakis.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

New language added to the bill also directs the Museum to \u201cbe dedicated to preserving, researching, and presenting the history, achievements, and lived experiences of biological women in the United States.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Another addition concerns \u201cdiversity of political viewpoints and authentic experiences.\u201d The bill specifies that museum exhibits and program should strive to represent the \u201c<\/span>diversity of the political viewpoints and authentic experiences\u201d of American women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Democratic Women\u2019s Caucus announced their opposition to the amended Smithsonian Women\u2019s History Museum Act on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>For years, we worked with Republicans on a bipartisan bill to get the Smithsonian American Women\u2019s History Museum across the finish line \u2026 But then with no warning, Republicans completely changed the bill, throwing away years of bipartisan work and broad support,\u201d Democratic Reps. Teresa Leger Fern\u00e1ndez of New Mexico, Hillary Scholten of Michigan, and Emilia Sykes of Ohio said in a statement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Democratic reps claim the amended bill gives \u201cTrump and his allies unregulated power over what content and which women can be included in the museum, and the museum\u2019s location.\u201d The amended bill does not seek to exclude any specific women or group of women, so far as I can tell. It does seek to prohibit museum curators from presenting men as women to guests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA museum about women, fought for and supported by women, should not be controlled by one man,\u201d the statement concludes. <\/span>A museum about women should not be controlled by a man, say female Democrats, but it <\/span>should<\/span><\/i> include men masquerading as women. Frankly, I\u2019m not sold on the concept of a museum dedicated solely to women\u2019s history. It seems more sensible for other Smithsonian museums to include women\u2019s contributions where appropriate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But Democrats\u2019 reaction to the amended bill is almost beyond parody. <\/span>\u201cSay, you know what this women\u2019s museum could use? More men!\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
