President Donald Trump\u2019s Friday decision to waive tariffs on ground beef imports from Argentina has raised questions about his motivations, as concerns emerge over the quality and safety of the imported product.<\/p>

Trump said that for the next 90 days, the U.S. would permit up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef to be imported without an out-of-quota tariff, under a commitment that the meat would be sold at 25% below current market prices. (RELATED: Trump\u2019s Grip Over The GOP Shows Signs Of Slipping)<\/strong><\/p>

With the midterms around the corner and a recent Pew Research suggesting that affordability may be one of the main issues on voters\u2019 minds come November, Trump said in the announcement that his goal is to \u201csubstantially lower the price of ground beef for working American families.\u201d<\/p>

Trump added that beef prices soared as the American beef herd fell to its smallest size in modern history under the Biden administration, and that the pause is only meant to be a temporary fix as \u201cwe work to rebuild this herd and help our ranchers.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cThe only price we have that\u2019s high is beef, and we\u2019ll get that down,\u201d Trump had said while first toying with the idea in October. \u201cAnd one of the things we\u2019re thinking about doing is beef from Argentina.\u201d<\/p>

In response, the National Cattlemen\u2019s Beef Association (NCBA) acknowledged that American-raised beef is more expensive, but said much of that difference has to do with \u201cthe work American cattle producers have done to improve the quality and safety of U.S. beef.\u201d<\/p>

The NCBA also pointed to what it described as Argentina\u2019s lower food safety standards, including the country\u2019s history with foot-and-mouth disease. Although the disease cannot be passed on to humans, the NCBA said it would \u201cdecimate our domestic livestock production\u201d if it were reintroduced to the U.S.<\/p>

However, Argentine experts told the Buenos Aires Herald that these claims were untrue, saying that the country has been foot-and-mouth disease-free for the last 25 years following an intense vaccination campaign at the turn of the millennium.<\/p>

In March, China suspended exports from one of Argentina\u2019s biggest meatpacking companies, Arrebeef SA after chloramphenicol, an antibiotic, was found in a container belonging to Arrebeef SA, according to La Nacion.<\/p>

The development has led some to question whether Trump is accepting meat that may be unsafe in an effort to lower food prices at the expense of Americans\u2019 health.<\/p>

White House spokesman Kush Desai told the Daily Caller that the U.S. imports food every year without issue and that neither the Food and Drug Administration nor the U.S. Department of Agriculture has changed its safety enforcement on domestic and foreign food for American consumers. \u201cPresident Trump has repeatedly affirmed his support for America\u2019s ranchers and farmers, including in today\u2019s announcement,\u201d Desai added. \u201cWhile the Administration will be easing tariffs on beef imports to address a short-term supply crunch, the Administration is simultaneously working closely with ranchers to grow America\u2019s cattle-herd size, which is currently at a multi-decade low.\u201d<\/p>
