Donald Trump built an unlikely coalition in 2016. In 2024, it only grew stronger. Now, with him off the ballot, the 2026 midterms will test whether it holds.<\/p>

Trump\u2019s 2024 base was the familiar one: white voters without college degrees, rural voters, men, and white evangelicals. But he also made real gains among low-propensity voters who usually sit out most election cycles, as well as Hispanic and black voters, younger men, and non-college voters more broadly. What held that coalition together, pollsters told the Daily Caller, was desperation: a demand for order and economic relief. That\u2019s also what makes it fragile now, hinging on how fast Trump can wind down the Iran war, bring down gas prices, and unite a party still fighting over healthcare and data centers.<\/p>

\u201cIt will be hard to motivate the non-propensity voters who turned out in 2024, because that is always the case,\u201d Robert Cahaly, the founder of Trafalgar Group, told the Caller. \u201cTrump will need to be heavily involved in the midterms if he wants to motivate those guys.\u201d<\/p>

The GOP has plenty of problems stacked against it heading into 2026. Domestic policy dominated the president\u2019s first year back in office \u2014 cleaning up the border crisis, keeping men out of women\u2019s sports \u2014 but foreign policy has defined the second. With U.S. troops fighting in the Middle East and prices climbing from the conflict, Trump\u2019s job approval hit the lowest point of his second term on August 4, at 39 percent, according to the RealClearPolitics average.<\/p>

\u201cI think [the coalition] wants 2024 Trump back,\u201d Mark Mitchell, founder of Honest Polling, told the Caller.<\/p>

\u201cWhat they voted for: mass deportations, draining the swamp, reductions in waste, fraud, abuse and election integrity. All these things are between 65 and 75 percent favorable. Like, they are all extremely popular,\u201d he added. \u201cThey basically want order and economic fairness. Almost 60 percent of people say they\u2019re changing their eating habits because of grocery prices.\u201d<\/p>

Messaging on the administration\u2019s domestic accomplishments has proven difficult. One official working on the 2026 midterms previously told the Caller it had been a challenge to keep the party on message in recent months. Another GOP operative was more blunt: while Republicans are well positioned nationally, their candidates are still being significantly out-raised at the individual level.<\/p>

While one party official told the Caller they expect the RNC midterm convention to be the moment that gets the GOP on the same page, team Trump has made a more aggressive push to redirect the party ahead of it. Top Trumpworld officials \u2014 including James Blair, pollster Tony Fabrizio and Senate Leadership Fund executive director Alex Latcham \u2014 went to Capitol Hill in mid-August to advise Senate candidates to talk more about healthcare, according to Axios. Republicans held a 46-point advantage when they emphasized \u201cmore transparency around insurers\u2019 profits, claim denials and wait times for patient care while hitting Democrats for lining insurers\u2019 pockets,\u201d Axios reported.<\/p>

\u201cI think there is some headway for the Trump administration to make on [healthcare messaging], and having people talk about that, because it lets Republicans talk about healthcare,\u201d Cahaly told the Caller. \u201cThey can say, \u2018Hey, [Obama] created a whole system that just basically let insurance companies make a huge profit.\u2019\u201d<\/p>

Congressional stock trading and cracking down on fraud were other strong messaging topics for the GOP, according to the polling Axios reported. The vice president, who has become the administration\u2019s top campaign surrogate, often leans on fraud messaging when making stops around the country. Top Republicans are also trying to steer the party clear of a thornier issue: data centers. The National Republican Senatorial Committee issued a memo, obtained by Axios, to AI companies warning that in Ohio, Democrats have hurt Republicans by making opposition to data centers a central part of their campaign.<\/p>

\u201cIf [Sen. Jon Husted] loses and data centers get the blame, politicians across the country will take notice \u2014 and they will not go near the next one. This has become a sleeper issue for the entire election cycle,\u201d the memo says, urging AI companies to do whatever they can to absorb the backlash.<\/p>

\u201cThe data center issue is a problem,\u201d Cahaly told the Caller, explaining that it is hard for the GOP to walk a fine line: it has to compete with China, but some communities don\u2019t want a data center in their town. Others do \u2014 they want the jobs and development that come with them. The winning message is somewhere in the middle. <\/p>

But the greatest tool the GOP believes it has, that Trump\u2019s coalition wants, is the president himself. <\/p>

For months, the right has broadcast its plan: put Trump on the ballot. Or at least make it seem that way, through endorsements and constant campaigning across the country. As of August 5, Trump has made 332 total endorsements and 313 primary endorsements, according to Ballotpedia. <\/p>

His 2026 primary success rate is 96 percent, according to Ballotpedia. Those endorsements haven\u2019t been tested in the 2026 general election, but they were, on a smaller scale, in 2025: of the nine endorsements Trump made that November, four were successful. A White House official previously told the Caller that as Labor Day gets closer and closer, expect to see the president on the campaign trail more. <\/p>

\u201cHere\u2019s the thing: every single Republican, like it or not, whether they like Trump or not, is going to get beat up because of Trump,\u201d Cahaly told the Caller. \u201cSo if they\u2019re going to get beat up because of Trump \u2014 even if he never campaigns for them, or if he campaigns for them every day \u2014 then why not have the strength that Trump provides when he is on the ballot?\u201d<\/p>

Mitchell told the Caller that he doesn\u2019t think the Trump endorsement will help GOP candidates, but he also doesn\u2019t believe it will sink them either. <\/p>

\u201cI don\u2019t think he\u2019s toxic yet,\u201d he said. <\/p>

For Mitchell, it boils down to one thing.<\/p>

\u201cI really do think it\u2019s the economy, stupid,\u201d Mitchell told the Caller. <\/p>

The GOP is aware of this. Several GOP officials working on the 2026 midterms previously admitted to the Caller that they needed to fix their approach to provide a solution and empathy for those struggling amid the conflict with Iran. <\/p>

But in the end, does it even matter? Will Trump\u2019s coalition truly make or break the midterms?<\/p>

\u201cThere\u2019s only so much the Trump coalition can do to win these elections. These elections are won district by district and state by state, and they\u2019d be better off to do to focus on the issues that move voters in their states,\u201d Cahaly told the Caller. <\/p>
