Democrat Rep. Jake Auchincloss of Massachusetts warned Maine voters against supporting controversial candidate Graham Platner, who is challenging incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins for Maine\u2019s Senate seat in November.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be a mistake for the Democratic Party to think that Graham Platner\u2019s brand of the Democratic Party is what wins us durable majorities throughout this country,\u201d Auchincloss said, according to Yahoo News.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A mid-May poll showed Platner leading Collins 48 percent to 41 percent, with 11 percent of voters undecided.<\/p>\n

Platner gained national attention after videos circulated online showing a chest tattoo depicting a Nazi SS \u2018Totenkopf\u2019 symbol. Platner <\/span>claimed in an October podcast interview<\/span> that he was unaware of the image\u2019s meaning when he got the tattoo and has since covered it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been clear about Graham Platner,\u201d Auchincloss told CNN. \u201cI find that tattoo and his commentary about it to be personally disqualifying.\u201d (RELATED: Dave Portnoy Torches Graham Platner Over Nazi Tattoo After Looking For Barstool\u2019s Help With Political Ad)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Auchincloss, a Harvard graduate and former Marine, is known in the Democratic Party as a staunch Biden defender who lashed out against criticism and concerns regarding the former president\u2019s physical and mental health issues \u2014 even as Biden\u2019s decline raised bipartisan questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe answer is not to tear down Joe Biden,\u201d Auchincloss told Yahoo News in 2022. \u201cJoe Biden is standing in the abyss right now, at a time when our democracy is fragile. We should be focused on making him a success in the latter half of his first term.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Auchincloss, who represents the country\u2019s historically most liberal district, <\/span>voted for Biden\u2019s policies<\/span> 100 percent of the time from 2021 to 2022, according to analysis from FiveThirtyEight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Notably, Auchincloss serves as the inaugural chairman of <\/span>Majority Democrats<\/span>, a super-PAC launched in 2025 by center-left elected officials. Other members include Democrats Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger and Texas state Rep. and Senate candidate James Talarico.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Platner became the likely Democratic candidate challenging Collins in the Maine race after Democrat Gov. Janet Mills dropped out in late April.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Platner\u2019s campaign has proved tricky waters for Democrats to navigate. Several of Platner\u2019s <\/span>old Reddit comments<\/span> also circulated last October, in which the former Marine called himself a \u201ccommunist,\u201d labeled white Americans as \u201cracist\u201d and \u201cstupid,\u201d and referred to law enforcement as \u201cbastards,\u201d saying \u201cF\u2014 these cops.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Maine oyster farmer has won endorsements from some of the staunchest progressives, including Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Platner <\/span>told the New York Times<\/span> that he spoke to Democratic Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York after Mills dropped out, earning the support of the Jewish lawmaker who had previously backed Mills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin, speaking with CNN, <\/span>called<\/span> Platner\u2019s comments \u201cindefensible, hurtful, and offensive,\u201d although he did not deem them disqualifying. <\/span>(RELATED: Leaked DNC 2024 Autopsy A Case Study In Stunning Incompetence)<\/b><\/p>\n

Democrat California Rep. Ro Khanna <\/span>told MSNBC<\/span> in October that there was \u201cno justification\u201d for Platner\u2019s comments, but said, \u201cI don\u2019t believe in this politics of personal destruction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
