The Enhanced Games \u2014 <\/span>dubbed<\/span> the \u201cSteroid Olympics\u201d by some onlookers \u2014 sort of answers my question. At the Enhanced Games, athletes are permitted to use all the performance-enhancing substances they please, so long as the athletes are under medical supervision and those substances are <\/span>approved<\/span> by the Food and Drug Administration. Accordingly, cocaine and heroin are disallowed. <\/span>Athletes had the choice to compete \u201cenhanced\u201d or \u201cnon-enhanced.\u201d <\/span>(RELATED: Tech Bro-Funded \u2018Enhanced Games\u2019 In Las Vegas Were Total Flop)<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cEnhanced\u201d Australian swimmer James Magnussen debuted a nearly unrecognizable physique at the games Sunday. The once-lean Olympic medalist drew silverback gorilla <\/span>comparisons<\/span>. Magnussen previously promised to \u201cjuice to the gills\u201d in preparation for the Enhanced Games and break the world record, according to The Guardian.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Magnussen finished last in the men\u2019s 100-meter and 50-meter freestyle. <\/span>Kristian Gkolomeev, an \u201cenhanced\u201d Greek swimmer, finished first in the men\u2019s 100-meter. He also nabbed first place in the men\u2019s 50-meter freestyle with a time of 20.81 seconds \u2014\u00a0a world record, unofficially.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gkolomeev was the only athlete to break a world record, receiving a $1 million bonus for the accomplishment. He wore a \u201csupersuit\u201d banned at the Olympics during his races.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Ben Proud, another \u201cenhanced\u201d swimmer, won first place in the men\u2019s 50-meter butterfly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But enhancement was no guarantee of victory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

American swimmer Hunter Armstrong, non-enhanced, took first in the men\u2019s 50-meter backstroke. Fred Kerley, non-enhanced, took first place in the men\u2019s 100-meter dash.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Investors in the Enhanced Games include PayPal and Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel, Donald Trump Jr., and German entrepreneur and investor Christian Angermayer. Australian businessman Aron D\u2019Souza founded the Enhanced Games.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some have taken Armstrong and Kerley\u2019s wins (and Magnussen\u2019s loss) as proof of the futility of \u201cenhancement.\u201d It may be true that an athlete taking performance-enhancing drugs will typically lose to a non-enhanced athlete with superior genetic potential and training.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But what if the latter were to take performance-enhancing drugs? Consider the super-superhuman feats an \u201cenhanced\u201d Michael Phelps or Usain Bolt might be capable of accomplishing. <\/span>(RELATED: 16-Year-Old Breaks Michael Phelps\u2019 Record At US Swimming Championships BLOG)<\/b><\/p>\n

(For the record, neither athlete has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs, and Phelps has <\/span>called<\/span> for the <\/span>World Anti-Doping Agency to adopt more<\/span> stringent anti-doping measures.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Regardless, the Enhanced Games are a form of human experimentation for which I\u2019d advocate. If \u201cenhanced\u201d athletes break world records, we get to witness unbelievable feats of athleticism. If they don\u2019t, then they don\u2019t. <\/span><\/p>\n
