Arcadia, California, Mayor Eileen Wang pleaded guilty after she was charged Tuesday with acting as an illegal agent of the People\u2019s Republic of\u00a0China, and now faces up to 10 years in prison. Of course, NBC News ran a story about online bigot trolls who replied to FBI Director Kash Patel\u2019s post announcing the charges. \u201cAdvocates said they are concerned that this rhetoric is part of a long history of fear and discrimination that has proliferated for generations in regard to Asian communities, especially Chinese immigrants,\u201d the outlet reported. \u201cExperts who spoke to NBC News said Asian people in the U.S. are often treated as perpetual outsiders, which can motivate violence in some cases.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wang is accused of collaborating with Yaoning \u201cMike\u201d Sun between late 2020 and 2022 to advocate for the interests of the PRC within the United States. The duo managed U.S. News Center, a website presented as a local news outlet for Chinese Americans, where they allegedly published pro-PRC material under the instruction of the PRC.<\/p>\n

Democratic California Rep. Judy Chu, who honored Wang in 2024 as a \u201cWoman of the Year,\u201d told NBC News she was \u201cshocked and disappointed\u201d by the case. The outlet also noted that she had bravely \u201cpushed back against anti-Asian sentiment that quickly began to circulate online and in some media outlets.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Asian American community has already weathered stigma, prejudice, and violence, fueled by rhetoric from President Trump and his administration,\u201d she said in a statement. \u201cWe saw this in the violent anti-Asian hate crimes during COVID-19, and the unfair targeting of scholars of Chinese descent in Trump\u2019s \u2018China Initiative\u2019 program \u2014 both of which I have fought against in Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yes, because the real issue here is online trolls who have nothing else better to do with their lives, and not the fact that the Chinese Communist Party infiltrated an American mayor and turned her against her country!<\/p>\n

For her part, Wang is sorry\u2014at least according to her lawyers.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe apologizes and is sorry for the mistakes she has made in her personal life,\u201d her attorneys said, NBC News reported. \u201cHer love and devotion for the Arcadia community have not changed and did not waver.\u201d<\/p>\n
