Democratic Michigan Senate candidate Haley Stevens melted down Wednesday when an interviewer asked about the pro-Israel lobby funneling donations to her campaign.<\/p>\n

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has had major influence over the Michigan Senate race in recent months by launching fundraising appeals to direct donors to support Stevens\u2019 campaign, The Detroit News reported. While being interview on AIPAC\u2019s influence over her campaign, Stevens got visibly frustrated during an interview with The Detroit News while being forced to address how the pro-Israel group has financially backed her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not breaking [Federal Elections Communications] laws by any stretch of the means. In fact, I\u2019m compliant with FEC laws and what\u2019s gone on too. Also, Chad, you know that individual contributions, no, I\u2019m not! Look, why would you ask me that question, first of all?\u201d Stevens asked.<\/p>\n

The interviewer said he asked the question because Stevens\u2019 opponents, Democratic Michigan Senate candidates Mallory McMorrow and Abdul El-Sayed, were going to use this information against her. (RELATED: Democrat Seeking Senate Promotion Moves To Impeach RFK Jr.)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd why do you think they\u2019re doing that? \u2026 You think it\u2019s foreign policy? Yeah, look, we should talk about foreign policy,\u201d Stevens replied.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

About 31% of donors who gave at least $200 to Stevens\u2019 Senate campaign also donated to AIPAC since the start of 2025, according to The Detroit News. An AIPAC affiliate spent more than $5 million between campaign donations and independent expenditures in 2022, the last time Stevens faced a House primary.<\/p>\n

Stevens said she is not worried about AIPAC\u2019s impact on her campaign and that she is not trying to distance herself from the group, according to The Detroit News.<\/p>\n

Other Democratic candidates have been caught melting down over simple questions during interviews. Former Democratic California Rep. Katie Porter, who is running to become the next governor of California, threatened to storm out of an interview with CBS News California in September 2025 when a reporter asked her to explain her messaging to Californians who voted for President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like this is unnecessarily argumentative. What is your question? \u2026 What I\u2019m saying to you is that, I don\u2019t want to keep doing this, I\u2019m gonna call it, thank you,\u201d Porter told CBS News California\u2019s Julie Watts at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not gonna do the interview with us?\u201d Watts asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNope, not like this. Not with seven follow-ups to every single question you\u2019ve asked,\u201d Porter said, leading Watts to say that the other candidates answered the question. \u201cI don\u2019t care, I don\u2019t care. I want to have a pleasant, positive conversation [in] which you asked me about every issue on this list.<\/p>\n

Democratic California gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra demanded that a reporter ask him some \u201csoftball questions\u201d during a May 12 interview with local news outlet KTLA.<\/p>\n

Stevens is running against El-Sayed, who is running to the left of her opponents and received the endorsement of independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. The other opponent, McMorrow, has called Israel\u2019s actions in Gaza a \u201cgenocide\u201d and has challenged establishment Democrats. In September, Stevens appeared to fabricate an endorsement from Berrien County Commissioner Chokwe Pitchford, who denied ever endorsing her.<\/p>\n

Michigan\u2019s Senate primary race is primed to be one of the most competitive in the U.S. this election cycle. Polls show mixed results about which candidate is leading the race.<\/p>\n
