Rodrigo has started wearing babydoll dresses \u2014 short dresses with high waistlines \u2014\u00a0and ruffled bloomers amid her new album rollout. The look has attracted objections.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[W]e need to have an actual serious conversation about Olivia Rodrigo mainstreaming Lolita and babydoll aesthetics that appeal to pedophiles,\u201d <\/span>reads<\/span> a tweet with over 350,000 views.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Some criticized a video of Rodrigo kneeling onstage, lifting up her dress to display her underwear-like shorts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rodrigo told the \u201cPopcast\u201d hosts: \u201cWhat\u2019s really, like, disturbing, is I feel like I actually wear \u2014 I have worn outfits that are, like, maybe revealing on stage. Like, I\u2019ve been on stage in, like, a sparkly bra and, like, little shorts, which is my right, that\u2019s fun, I felt cool and comfortable in that. And like, that wasn\u2019t inappropriate, but me, like, fully covered up in a dress that people deem to be like, childlike, was inappropriate \u2026 It just, like, shows how we just, like, really normalize pedophilia in our culture.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For what it\u2019s worth, I don\u2019t think Rodrigo or her team are trying to \u201cappeal to pedophiles.\u201d I think Rodrigo is trying to tap into the 1990s grunge or alternative rock aesthetic and not doing a very good job at it.\u00a0<\/span>If anything, the response to Rodrigo\u2019s outfits and choreography suggests pedophilia is extraordinarily taboo in the West, and that people are rather vigilant about the subject.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But Rodrigo has a point. Dancing around in a sparkly bra and little shorts does not provoke controversy, because our expectation is that pop stars will dress like hookers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rodrigo continued: \u201cAnd also, it\u2019s just, is this, this, like rhetoric that we\u2019re fed as girls since we\u2019re so little, which is like, \u2018Don\u2019t wear that, because then a man is going to sexualize your body and it\u2019s your fault.\u2019 Like, it\u2019s so weird \u2026 I didn\u2019t think that I looked sexy in that at all. I was like, \u2018This is so cool.\u2019 I feel like I look like Kathleen Hanna or like Courtney Love, all these people who are my heroes. Rodrigo contradicts herself. She clearly understands that certain items of clothing carry sexual connotations \u2014 she doesn\u2019t think she looked \u201csexy\u201d in the babydoll dress, so she presumably thinks she\u2019s looked \u201csexy\u201d in other outfits.<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201crhetoric\u201d she refers to is basically common sense. If you don\u2019t want men to notice certain areas of your body, don\u2019t wear clothing which emphasizes those areas. I\u2019m also amused by the very Zoomer way in which she qualifies her beliefs: \u201cLike, it\u2019s so weird.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When you don\u2019t have a conclusion, just apply social pressure to convince your audience that you\u2019re right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rodrigo added that she\u2019s \u201cvery protective\u201d of \u201cyounger women and girls,\u201d and doesn\u2019t ever \u201cwant them to be, like, fed that rhetoric.\u201d Rodrigo is right. The best way to protect younger women and girls is to let them dress like prostitutes, if they please.<\/span><\/p>\n

My sense is that Rodrigo\u2019s fiercest critics are women. Is the average man even familiar with the term \u201cbabydoll dress\u201d? Is the average man at all familiar with the \u201cOlivia Rodrigo outfit\u201d discourse?<\/span><\/p>\n

The funniest element of this \u201ccontroversy\u201d is that it is entirely playing out in people\u2019s heads. Rodrigo\u2019s critics are envisioning a man who thinks Rodrigo looks like a young child and finds that attractive. Rodrigo is mad at that same hypothetical man for sexualizing her. That man has yet to materialize, based on a cursory scroll through social media.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
