Erin Splaine announced to her community Thursday that the Second Congregational Meeting House Society, Unitarian Universalist church would be canceling its customary July 4th celebrations, which include a public reading of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. <strong>(RELATED: <\/strong><\/span><strong>Town Votes To Cut Police Staff, Cries When It Impacts Beloved Fourth Of July Tradition)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe came to this decision in large measure because of the recent gutting of the 1965 Voting Rights Act by the Supreme Court,\u201d Splaine wrote in a letter to the Nantucket Current. She was referring to the 2026 Louisiana v. Callais<\/span><span>\u00a0case that declared racial gerrymandering unconstitutional.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Slaine claimed that white people experience the \u201cRights and Privileges\u201d enshrined in the founding documents in a manner \u201ctragically, often violently, and unequally applied to fellow citizens who are not white.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Such injustice, Slaine argued, means celebrating America\u2019s history \u201cwithout context \u2026 perpetuates the harm, injustice, and anti-democratic process,\u201d she wrote in part.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/10519169\/dailycaller_incontent_2 --> <\/p>\n<p><span>Slaine mentioned that she and her congregation have been concerned since the April Supreme Court case and are on an \u201con-going process \u2026 to better understand [their] own whiteness.\u201d <strong>(RELATED: <\/strong><\/span><strong>New York City Teachers Union Hosts Workshop Detailing The \u2018Harmful Effects Of Whiteness\u2019)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0\u201cWe are working as a congregation and as members of this community to expand our knowledge \u2014 to learn the entirety of our American history,\u201d she continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hometransferguide.com\/?p=890\">Peter Doocy Breaks Big Family News<\/a><\/p>\n<p> <!-- \/10519169\/dailycaller_incontent_3 --> <\/p>\n<p><span>Slaine, on behalf of the church\u2019s Board of Trustees, discouraged people from contacting her on social media. Instead, she requested individuals make appointments with her because social media is not ideal for \u201ctender, important conversations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Nantucket Unitarian Universalist church is marked as an \u201cLGBTQ Welcoming Congregation\u201d on the Unitarian Universalist Association\u2019s (UUA) website, meaning the church completed a UUA Welcoming Congregation Program and is \u201cintentionally more inclusive towards bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The church is a member of the Unitarian Universalism religion, which \u201ccelebrates diversity of belief,\u201d according to the Nantucket congregation\u2019s website.
