John Elijah Matthews, 25, has been charged with murder. Surveillance video captured Matthews boarding a Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) train Saturday morning before allegedly launching an unprovoked attack, according to an arrest warrant obtained by the Daily Caller. The victim, Margaret Swan, was identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner\u2019s Office on Sunday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) report.<\/p>\n

The warrant, which details CCTV footage from inside the train car, indicates there was no interaction between the two prior to the assault. At approximately 11:21 a.m., Swan was sitting alone on the train. Just before 11:25 a.m., Matthews boarded and walked to her side of the car, lingering nearby before approaching her seat.<\/p>\n

Roughly 19 seconds after positioning himself next to Swan, Matthews \u201cis seen walking up to (Swan) and standing just to her right.\u201d Moments later, according to the warrant, he pulled out a knife, opened it, and cut the victim in the throat.<\/p>\n

The warrant states Swan screamed and attempted to rise from her seat as Matthews continued the attack. Surveillance footage allegedly shows him holding the victim during the stabbing before \u201cthrowing (Swan) to the floor and standing near her until the train arrived at the Oakland City Station,\u201d less than two minutes later.<\/p>\n

When the train reached Oakland City Station, Matthews exited the train with the knife still in hand as officers responded to the scene, according to the warrant. Investigators said officers immediately attempted life-saving measures on Swan, but their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.<\/p>\n

The CCTV footage of Matthews attacking Swan has not been released to the public.<\/p>\n

On Monday morning, the Fulton County Sheriff\u2019s Office released Matthews\u2019 mugshot.<\/p>\n

Court documents state Matthews did not provide an address or phone number and \u201cdid not want to continue speaking with detectives\u201d after being taken to the College Park MARTA Police Precinct. MARTA condemned the attack, saying, \u201cThis appears to be a senseless act of violence, and our thoughts are with the victim\u2019s loved ones and those who witnessed this horrific incident,\u201d in a statement provided to 11Alive.<\/p>\n

The transit agency also addressed concerns about rider safety, adding, \u201cWe understand the concern and fear incidents like this can cause for those who ride and work on the MARTA system. MARTA Police are actively investigating and remain committed to the safety and security of our riders and employees.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another violent incident on Atlanta\u2019s public transit system occurred last weekend, adding to concerns among riders about safety and security, according to a FOX 5 report.<\/p>\n

According to the outlet, MARTA Police officers are investigating after a man was stabbed multiple times at the Georgia State Station on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred at approximately 1:29 p.m. when police responded to a report of a stabbing at the station. A male victim told officers he had been stabbed multiple times and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities told FOX 5 his injuries were \u201cnon-life-threatening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Concerns about crime on public transit systems have remained a prominent issue in several major cities following a number of high-profile attacks. The issue drew renewed attention after the brutal murder of Ukrainian woman Iryna Zarutska aboard a Lynx Blue Line train in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 22. Authorities charged Decarlos Brown Jr. in connection with the killing after surveillance footage allegedly showed him pulling out a pocket knife and stabbing Zarutska three times aboard the train.<\/p>\n

The case remains ongoing, with a North Carolina judge expected to determine whether Brown is competent to stand trial. Brown, who has an extensive criminal history, is accused of fatally stabbing the 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee as she was returning home from her job at a pizza restaurant.<\/p>\n

According to court proceedings, Brown was found unable to stand trial following a competency evaluation conducted on Dec. 29. He is also undergoing a separate evaluation to determine whether he is fit to face federal charges related to Zarutska\u2019s murder.<\/p>\n
