Trump initially told Daily Caller White House Correspondent Reagan Reese that the financial situations of Americans were \u201cnot even a little bit\u201d of a factor when pressuring to Iran to resolve the ongoing conflict with a diplomatic solution. The comments came as Americans are feeling the pain of the war\u2019s economic effects, such as higher gas and food prices. Trump defended the remarks he made during a Friday interview with Fox News\u2019s Bret Baier. During the interview, Baier pressed Trump on his blunt admission.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can imagine how many people stop the sound bite at, \u2018I don\u2019t think about Americans\u2019 financial situation,\u2019 so what\u2019s your response to that framework?\u201d Baier asked.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s right, that\u2019s a perfect statement,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI would make it again.\u201d The president then\u00a0added his view that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon outweighs the short-term economic impacts.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very simple: when people hear me say it, everybody agrees,\u201d Trump continued. \u201cShort-term pain. It\u2019s gonna be short-term pain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gas prices have skyrocketed roughly 50% since the start of the war with Iran, with the national average at the time of writing hovering around $4.52 per gallon.<\/p>\n

The economic pressure has been tied to freedom of navigation at the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil chokepoint through which 34% of the world\u2019s crude oil passes, according to the International Energy Agency.<\/p>\n

The White House pointed the Daily Caller News Foundation to a previous statement from White House Communications Director Steven Cheung defending Trump\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President\u2019s ultimate responsibility is the safety and security of Americans,\u201d Cheung stated Tuesday. \u201cIran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and if action wasn\u2019t taken, they\u2019d have one, which threatens all Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n
