1,000-Mile Stretch Of US Facing Severe Storms, Flooding Threat

A round of severe thunderstorms will organize Wednesday across a 1,000-mile stretch that ranges from the Central Plains to Upstate New York.

Across the Canadian Prairies, a powerful low-pressure area will continue to shift with a cold front associated with it, which will trigger thunderstorms leveled between strong and severe.

Storms will form across the cold front’s length, with 60-plus mph wind gusts anticipated to be the top worry in regard to the storms on the stronger side.

With that being said, a corridor with more impactful severe weather could organize along western New York if the adequate amount of energy builds in the atmosphere.

A Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk has been issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) for portions of northeast Ohio, northwest Pennsylvania and western New York — areas already impacted by recent severe weather.

Storms will move slightly to the south by Thursday as the cold front delivers rain to the Ohio Valley, central Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic.

Cities throughout the zone will be at risk for potential flooding due to deep tropical moisture from the Gulf of America being pulled northward.

Areas of Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania are under a Level 2 out of 4 flood risk.

The threat of severe weather Thursday is low, however, a number of thunderstorms will have the potential to generate wind gusts ranging from 50-60 mph.

With that being said, the combination of the cold front, deep tropical moisture and upslope flow in the mountains is expected to cause several thunderstorms.
