The peace process between the U.S. and Iran has already hit a major snag Friday after Israel launched a wave of deadly strikes in Southern Lebanon.
Vice President J.D. Vance planned to depart the U.S. for Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday to meet with an Iranian delegation, but the White House has subsequently confirmed that face-to-face negotiations have been delayed.
Israel launched a wave of airstrikes overnight that killed 18 people in Southern Lebanon, according to the Lebanese government. The Israel Defense Forces claimed the strikes were in response to the deaths of four IDF soldiers, the BBC reported. Al Mayadeen, an Arab media outlet, reported that the Iranian negotiating delegation delayed the trip because of Israel’s occupation of Southern Lebanon and the latest escalation. The Iranians have maintained that Lebanon is crucial to any future deal, and that the IDF’s continued occupation is a clear violation of the signed memorandum of understanding, which states that hostilities must end on all fronts, the outlet reported.
Reuters, citing a U.S. official, reported Friday morning that Israel and Hezbollah had reached a ceasefire agreement set to begin at 9:00 a.m.
