Greetings, Dear Reader,
Brief note before we get started: I will not be writing tomorrow.
I’ve got some travel down south to promote the journalism program I run in Virginia and I just won’t have time. I’m sure you’ll miss me.
So what’s happening?
NORMIES
There’s a word sitting like a piping hot coal at the center of the fringe left’s most virulent political strain, and it’s time we who care about western civ start hammering it for all its worth.
First, some stats. Roughly 40% of New York City’s population is foreign-born. That’s up 10% since the turn of the century, and it’s a meaningful 10%. Nearly the same amount, 42%, are on Medicaid, 20% are on food stamps, more than a third live in “rent-stabilized” apartments, 5% live in public housing and 25% (!!!) either work for the government itself or a government-funded NGO.
In 2014, the New York State Medicaid program was paying 20,000 people to stay at home with ailing relatives in an at-home nursing program. Following a rule change in 2015, the number jumped to 250,000. Now that number has surpassed 620,000 people. It’s fully 12 percent of NYC’s private sector. It’s also dominated by immigrants (anyone else smell a scam?).
Now the next relevant question: Who voted for all the socialists?
Not just Mamdani, but three Zohran-endorsed, avowed socialists just won their primaries for US Congress in NYC. One of them, Darializa Avila Chevalier, has been so consistently and explicitly vocal about her intent to destroy western civilization that some people wonder if Congress will even seat her.
Chevalier won areas of New York City based on two key metrics. The less Hispanic and working class, the more white, “educated” and young, the more likely she was to carry the neighborhood.
Specifically, so-called “downwardly mobile” young, white people with college debt and pointless educations.
The only hope for these people to make a living is to land an executive gig in government welfare or a laptop job at an NGO that acts as a middleman for government welfare. That’s pretty much it.
New York City is a post-American political hellscape dominated by a young, white, mediocre-elite vanguard that envisions a sprawling redistributive administrative state catering mostly to rapidly growing foreign populations.
They need this to work because the other option is no power or influence whatsoever and making coffees for $20 an hour forever.
Thankfully, the word at the core of their ideology is our strength: “Normativity.”
You’ve heard it before I’m sure. “Heteronormativity” is one of their favorites. The ranks of this vanguard are dominated by “educated” critical theorists applying superficial, low-IQ versions of Chomskyite contrarianism to nearly every aspect of life.
These are the same people in New York who think the government officially referring to pregnant women as “gestating parents” is perfectly acceptable. At the center of everything they believe is a core assumption that “normativity” is morally wrong and must be subverted and ultimately destroyed.

In the meantime, the socialist turn of NYC has caused a bit of a disagreement among conservatives right now. Some believe these types winning is a gift to the GOP. Others believe that this fringe vanguard, like the Bolsheviks of last century, has the potential to suddenly not be so fringe anymore.
Indeed, nationally, self-identified Democrats sympathize more with socialism than their moderate cohort.
Fortunately, both sides are right. Conservatives should have urgency, but also, this is a bit of a gift. It all boils down to that central assumption among elite leftists: That normalcy is bad.
Normativity, goes the thinking, is itself a form of “oppression.” This is why they want to dismantle everything that’s normal. The nuclear family, borders, capitalism. Even more insane, the very meanings of basic words and ideas. Gender is a “construct.” Marriage is oppression. Success is plunder. But looting? That’s just speech of the oppressed.
“Do you know that you are a ‘cismale’? Have you ever heard of that term?” Norm Macdonald asked podcast guest Stephen Merchant in 2016.
“A cisman?”
“Yes, so what it means is you were born a man and you identify as a man.”
“I don’t understand. Is this a new phrase?” Merchant asked politely.
“Yes. It’s a way of marginalizing a normal person,” said Macdonald.
Speaking of normal, something else interesting happened yesterday.
The New York Times ran an entire article about Usha Vance and the “Power of the Pregnant Image.” In it, they cast Usha and her “stretchy coral dress” as symbols of “pro-natalism”, “family” and “MAGA optics.”
In response, Usha tweeted a screencap of the dress. It’s from Old Navy and goes for $8.75.
That’s the big conspiracy/controversy from New York City’s hometown newspaper. Usha wears $8 maternity dresses and reads to her kids. It’s the normalcy, Dear Reader, that bothers them.
One well-placed communicator in conservative politics remarked to me privately, “The NYT darkly hinting at the political symbolisms of pregnancy and [Usha] says ‘so anyway, ladies, here’s an amazing support pillow’ is a perfect contrast.”
“Truly, just, be normal. And the normies will respond.”
That, ladies and gents, is the ballgame. The radicals might be aggressive, but they are truly few. They’re also institutionally, as a matter of course, incompetent. Competent people don’t hope and dream to make their livelihood drawing six figures from a do-nothing, government-funded NGO.
What conservatives need to do most is simply appeal to normalcy. The normies outnumber the radicals 10:1.
The rest will play out perfectly.
