Marine Le Pen Cleared To Run For President After Public Funds Scandal
A French appeals court on Tuesday upheld Marine Le Pen’s conviction for misusing European Union funds but significantly reduced the political penalty against the National Rally leader, clearing the way for her to compete in France’s 2027 presidential election.

The ruling marks a major victory for Le Pen after a lower court’s 2025 decision effectively barred her from seeking public office for five years, according to the BBC. However, the appeals court shortened the ban and said they believe the penalty has already been served.
The Associated Press (AP) reported that the Paris appeals court upheld Le Pen’s conviction for embezzling roughly €2.8 million ($3.2 million) in European Parliament funds that prosecutors said were used to pay party staff rather than legitimate parliamentary assistants.
However, the court reduced her ineligibility period from five years to 45 months, with two-thirds of that sentence suspended. Because Le Pen has already served 15 months of the ban, she is once again eligible to seek office, according to the AP.
The court also reduced Le Pen’s prison sentence from four years to three years, with two years suspended. Despite that, the remainder of her sentence will be served at home, where she will be required to wear an ankle monitor, according to the outlet.
While this is not something that can stop her from running, Le Pen has previously emphasized that she would likely not run for office if she had to wear an electronic monitor because she wouldn’t feel “totally free” to campaign, according to the BBC.

However, after the Tuesday court decision, Le Pen announced that she would be running in 2027 and would appeal the ruling that she has to wear the electronic monitor, the AP reported.
“I will therefore campaign without an electronic bracelet,” she said in a television interview Tuesday night local time, according to the AP. “Tonight, I am a candidate for the presidential election.”
Le Pen, who has unsuccessfully sought the presidency three times, has consistently polled among the strongest potential contenders for France’s next presidential election, the outlet previously reported. With Emmanuel Macron unable to campaign again due to term limits, Le Pen’s popularity could lead to a win for her fourth campaign.
Although Le Pen’s conviction remains on the books, the appeals court’s decision removes what had been the biggest legal obstacle standing between the longtime nationalist leader and another bid for the Élysée Palace in 2027.
