Is It Really This Hard For Politicians To Admit The Truth About Their Health?
Joe Biden. Mitch McConnell. The congressman nobody had heard about until he went missing for months. Why are politicians so opaque about their health and cognitive abilities?

Americans have unfortunately come to assume that politicians lie virtually every time they open their mouths. Now, we all assume that when a politician is too old or beleaguered by an aging body and brain to serve in office, their handlers will also lie and dodge and chum the waters with carefully crafted statements rather than just telling the truth, plain and simple. For his entire presidency, Biden’s lapsing mind and general senility were covered up by corporate media, members of his cabinet, and congressional Democrats.

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein passed away in September 2023 at the age of 90. But her final year in the Senate was a scandal. During a Senate vote in July 2023, she had to tell an aide to “just say aye” because she couldn’t do so herself.
Republican New Jersey Rep. Tom Kean Jr. was MIA for months, missing 20% of the votes between January and March. On June 30, he finally announced why he had disappeared: he was depressed.
Republican Florida Rep. Neal Dunn has also been missing from Congress, and even missed an important War Powers Resolution vote June 3. According to President Donald Trump, Dunn has some serious “terminal” heart issues. He will also not be seeking reelection. Maybe he should just … resign?
Now, Republican Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell and his team are in the same situation. McConnell was hospitalized June 14 after paramedics found him unconscious inside his Washington, D.C., residence. They also performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for a “cardiac arrest.” It was the latest incident in a string of recent health problems.

Rather than being honest about what’s going on with his health, whether he suffered a heart attack, or whether he is even cognitively alert, McConnell’s staff and allies are being intentionally obtuse and crafty. (RELATED: Email Suggests Mitch McConnell Health Response Is Coordinated Effort)
Scott Jennings, who worked on several of McConnell’s campaigns, claimed Tuesday that he spoke with the senator about several topics, including the wars in Iran and Ukraine.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said June 15 that McConnell was “dialed in” on their conference’s legislative calls.
Republican Kentucky Rep. Brett Guthrie told a reporter Wednesday that he had texted McConnell, but insinuated the senator wasn’t even in D.C.
McConnell’s office said in a statement he was “working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.”
Does anyone actually believe any of this? It’s highly doubtful.
Republicans want to push McConnell over the finish line to avoid an early special election between candidates, Republican Rep. Andy Barr and former Democratic Rep. Charles Booker, before the November midterms. Democratic Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear cannot pick a replacement, but he can decide on when the special election occurs. If he wanted to, he could pick an odd day and bet on low voter turnout to deliver McConnell’s Senate seat, temporarily, to Booker. They also want him to stick around and continue casting votes, if possible.
It might be a short-term gain for the Republican Party, but what kind of damage does it do to Americans’ faith and trust in Congress? Why would they believe in a political system that simply uses elected representatives as senile puppets to serve a party agenda, whether it’s Biden or McConnell? Is that really healthy for our country, long-term?
