RON HART: Maine, A Political Rorschach Test

Spending time in Maine this month, it occurs to me, it is just like other states. It has a flag, people, and divided politics.

I have absorbed the state’s entire political philosophy: form a committee to investigate having a committee, postpone the decision until mud season is over, and do it again.

It is a place where kids whose parents sent them to Skidmore, Oberlin, or Vassar College can be unemployed with little judgment from the locals. It is a state with liberal colleges that invent majors to prove that everything bad is the fault of Republicans, its leading export is Champaign Socialists.

In a state that is 99 percent white, you can be a white person if you feel bad about it. They believe in BLM and stand behind the state’s African Americans, Thomas and Angela.

I tried to fit in like a local. Graham Platner came up and asked me where I was from. I blurted, “Bangor.” He instinctively responded, “Bangor? I don’t ever know her.”

So now that those who endorsed Graham Platner (knowing 99 percent of what was already out there on him) then ran him out of the race when he dropped in the polls. That’s when Dems get moral. Now they are forming a committee of 600 Democratic faithful to decide his replacement. Imagine what that crowd of libs looks like. Six hundred of Maine’s main Democrats meet July 25th, so good luck getting your poodle groomed that weekend.

Bernie Sanders stood by Platner. And my two favorite Indians, Democrat California Rep. Ro Khanna and Democrat Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, initially doubled down on their endorsements. (RELATED: Maine State Representative Claims Graham Platner Wants Her To Replace Him)

Trump is more of a native American than Liz Warren. At least he has a legitimate tribal name, Wounded Ear. And since nominating Platner with his Nazi tattoo, they have stopped calling Trump a Nazi in Maine, as it just helps him in the polls.

Dems thought they had finally found a male candidate who was not a wussie. Dems get very few real male votes, and they are trying to focus-group their messaging to reach one. Even the Soy Boy Toys “R” Us heir (or heiress, hard to say by appearance) has sexual misconduct allegations. Platner had just come up with his campaign slogan targeting women: Platner Needs Your Vote, and He Will NOT Take No for an Answer.

It is fun to watch Democrats who made a big deal about the #MeToo movement, Believe All Women, and use their sanctimonious virtue signaling on that to say that toxic GOP men are the predators. This is from the party of Bill Clinton, Eliot Spitzer, Harvey Weinstein, Anthoney Weiner, Bill Cosby, Eric Swalwell, John Conyer, John Edwards, Al Franken, Jeffrey Epstein, and now Graham Platner. Quick, name just two Republicans that fit with the above? Me thinks “the ladies doth protest too much.”

Eliot Spitzer was so bad that he had to sell the “L” in his first name to pay legal defense bills.

Platner really had little chance of beating workhorse Senator Susan Collins. His whole campaign was a Heil Mary.

My buddy P.J. O’Rourke lived dangerously close to Maine and famously said after they were the first state to outlaw smoking in housing projects, “Smoking is wrong. Progressive elites may be confused about the existence of right and wrong when it comes to wars against genocidal fanatics, market freedom, and the death penalty for mass murderers. But not when it comes to smoking.” P.J., a cigar smoker, went on, “Poor people don’t have a lot of pleasures; they have cigarettes.”

Of course, no discussion of Maine politics is complete without mentioning the annual migration of seasonal residents, who arrive bearing kayaks, fleece vests, and strong opinions about how charming everything should remain. Millennials and Gen Xers love Maine, since they like an authentic experience that is not too threatening.

Mainers do have a sense of humor. We went to a homing pigeon event where falconers or aviculturists showed us how it works. I asked the guy if he made much money in raising competitive pigeons. He said Yeah, I have sold this homing pigeon on Facebook Marketplace 30 times.
