McConnell’s latest hospitalization was due to a fall in his Washington home, where he was briefly left unconscious June 14. McConnell later developed pneumonia while he was being rehabilitated and has since been absent from the Senate.
During his hospitalization, McConnell’s office released two photos of the senator in recovery in response to growing calls for transparency. Several colleagues and allies of the 84-year-old senator, like Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Scott Jennings, have also spoken to McConnell on the phone during his hospitalization.
Notably, McConnell has not been seen or photographed by anyone independent from his office since he was hospitalized nearly two months ago.
“Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home,” McConnell said in a statement to reporters. “Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff.” (RELATED: Mitch McConnell’s Docs Give Health Update About Elderly Senator)
The retiring senator also vowed to return to his role in the Senate, despite repeated and prolonged hospitalizations, saying he will continue to receive medical attention from home.

“On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business.”
McConnell faced an onslaught of scrutiny for the lack of transparency surrounding his condition. Critics also noted that his state continued to go unrepresented while McConnell was being hospitalized.
Notably, the Senate Agriculture Committee failed to roll out the Republican Farm Bill on Tuesday due to McConnell’s absence after Democrats unanimously voted against it.
McConnell has also been hospitalized on at least three separate occasions since 2023, has had multiple freezes on camera, and is routinely wheeled around the Capitol Hill complex in a wheelchair.
