REP. JULIA LETLOW: Fauci Owes Americans Full Transparency
When recently subpoenaed by Congress to testify about the origins of COVID-19, Dr. Anthony Fauci declined to comment over 100 times and was issued a contempt resolution. His silence was deafening, and his obstruction was heartbreaking.
COVID-19 claimed the lives of over one million Americans and fundamentally changed our society. My family knows all too well the heartbreak associated with the pandemic, as we tragically lost my healthy, 41-year-old husband and father of my two young children, Luke.
Grieving families like mine want answers as to how it started. Full transparency is crucial to stopping the next pandemic from taking more lives.
That’s why Congress — and all Americans — must hear from those who directed the government’s response to COVID-19. Public health leaders like Dr. Fauci were in the best position to ask questions and gather evidence regarding how the virus originated.
As a mom, I want those answers so that other families don’t have to suffer one day. And as a member of Congress, I feel a similar responsibility to my constituents — alongside an obligation to ensure that executive branch leaders don’t hide vital information from the public.
Significant evidence points to the virus originating in a Wuhan lab, the theory favored by a declassified CIA analysis. However, in the past, Dr. Fauci labeled this a conspiracy, despite his recently released diary entries showing him lending credence to the lab-leak theory behind closed doors.
Worse, Dr. Fauci’s diary provides evidence of a public official more concerned about preserving celebrity status than investigating the origins of a deadly pandemic.
Americans aren’t concerned about Dr. Fauci’s photoshoots, entertainment choices, or popularity on the Washington social scene. Instead, we want to know how the virus started, what our leaders knew, and what they will do in the future to guard against such risks.

Families like mine deserve answers to these questions. President Trump has taken smart action to stop taxpayer funding of the risky, gain-of-function research that was likely involved in the creation of COVID-19. But full accountability for how this happened is essential.
It took congressional investigations and media reports in 2021 to reveal taxpayer dollars flowing from the NIH to the Wuhan Lab. Left to their own devices, leaders like Dr. Fauci have proven to lack transparency in dealing with the origins of the virus. That is why their testimony is so important.
Families who’ve suffered the consequences of COVID-19don’t desire endless political drama. We want answers, and it is imperative that we leave no stone unturned. That’s why congressional oversight is needed.
When public health leaders obstruct congressional inquiries, they create more noise than they would by answering questions honestly and straightforwardly.
Americans deserve to hear from Dr. Fauci and to learn more about the origins of COVID-19. Transparency is crucial to preventing the next pandemic, confronting Communist China, and holding individuals in positions of power responsible.
