Local Gov’t May Seize ‘Batman’ House Over Lack Of Bat Surveys

The English mansion that played Wayne Manor in “Batman Begins” could be taken from its owner over a missing bat survey, among other maintenance issues.

Buckinghamshire Council’s Aug. 4repairs notice gives the owner one month to produce evidence that a licensed bat ecologist has been appointed to survey the property, according to the Leighton Buzzard Observer. Council deputy leader Peter Strachan gave the same one-month figure to CBS News.

The council can ask the Secretary of State for authorization to buy Mentmore Towers compulsorily two months after service, unless the notice is withdrawn, the Observer reported. That route would require further legal proceedings. No compulsory purchase decision has been made. Historic England guidance tells owners to arrange bat surveys before building work reaches the planning stage. Owners who skip the survey must halt work if bats turn up and could face prosecution, according to the agency.

The notice also covers roofs on the main wing, service wing and conservatory wing along with eight towers, according to the Observer. Chimneys, rooflights, roof lanterns and leadwork also sit on the schedule. The notice describes the work as “reasonably necessary for the proper preservation” of the building.

Historic England rates the mansion’s condition as “very bad” and its trend as “declining,” according to the agency’s Heritage at Risk register. The entry assigns Mentmore Towers the highest priority category, meaning immediate risk of further rapid deterioration or loss of fabric with no solution agreed.

Three bat-emergence surveys must finish by August 2027, along with any license required from Natural England, the Observer reported. The owner must also name qualified contractors, fix a start date during 2027 and file a completion timetable. Roughly a year of paperwork stands between the notice and the start of repairs.

Mentmore Towers Ltd has held the property since 1999, according to SAVE.

Mentmore Towers appeared as Wayne Manor in the 2005 film “Batman Begins.” “The Mummy Returns” and “Johnny English” also used the house, and Spice Girls shot their 1998 video for “Goodbye” there.
