Florida Governor DeSantis Offers ‘Asylum’ To Holdout Lindsay Clancy Juror

Florida’s governor threw his support behind the lone juror who blocked an acquittal for a mother who admitted killing her three children.

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday offered “asylum” to the holdout juror in the Lindsay Clancy case after NBC10 Boston published a report detailing the man’s alleged past domestic violence, the New York Post reported. DeSantis accused the outlet of trying to destroy the reputation of a juror whose identity remains protected. “A man objected to allowing a woman to kill her three young kids and get away with it, so NBC is trying to smear that juror, whose identity should be protected. Another low for legacy media,” DeSantis wrote on X. He added, “If the juror is being harassed, Florida will provide asylum — I’m sure he’d be welcomed and appreciated.”

The Republican governor previously called the proceedings a “kangaroo court,” according to The Hill. His comments followed a report from NBC10 Boston alleging the juror was accused of assaulting his then-wife in 2021, though court records reviewed by the outlet show the charge was later dismissed. The station also reported the man’s nephew secured a restraining order against him last year that stayed active while he served on the jury, and that his landlord won a judgment topping $12,000 in unpaid rent during deliberations.

Inside the jury room, foreperson Roni Carlson said the panel nearly reached a verdict before the holdout backed away. “He admitted he had reasonable doubt, and I started filling out the forms, I was so excited,” Carlson told CNN, recalling that the juror then said, “But I’m still not going to say that she’s not guilty by reason of insanity.”

The 12-member panel of nine women and three men split 11-1 after more than 38 hours of deliberation, CNN reported. Defense attorneys asked the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court to remove the juror as biased, but the court denied the request and Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial Sept. 4.

Clancy, 36, admitted strangling Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, at the family’s Duxbury home in 2023, CNN reported. Her attorney argued postpartum psychosis left her not criminally responsible.

Not everyone welcomed the governor’s offer. Writer Richard Hanania mocked the move on X, calling DeSantis a “ridiculous buffoon,” according to Raw Story.
