Town Votes To Cut Police Staff, Cries When It Impacts Beloved Fourth Of July Tradition

The town of Rutland, Massachusetts, recently canceled its main Fourth of July celebrations over concerns about “adequate public safety staffing,” according to an online letter.

The letter was published by the Rutland Fourth of July Committee along with the Rutland Fire and Police Department and the Town of Rutland. The decision to cancel the town’s Fourth of July celebrations was impacted by “anticipated staffing limitations,” according to the fire and police department, the letter indicates.

“Rutland’s 4th of July celebration is a cherished tradition that brings neighbors and generations together. The decision to cancel was not made lightly,” the letter reads.

“Although the 4th of July Committee successfully raised the funds needed for the event, the celebration cannot take place without adequate public safety staffing. Police, fire, and EMS personnel are essential to ensure the safety of attendees, manage traffic, and maintain emergency response coverage throughout the town.”

“Due to anticipated staffing limitations, our Police and Fire Chiefs have determined that they cannot safely support both the event and routine emergency services at the same time. Moving forward under these conditions would put both attendees and the broader community at risk,” it continues.

The Fourth of July Committee said it considered utilizing outside safety personnel to secure the event, but feared the move would create more safety concerns if a “unified command structure” and “coordinated operations” were lacking.

The decision to cancel the town’s Fourth of July celebrations follows Rutland voters’ recent rejection of a Proposition 2 1/2 override, according to CBS News. Four police officers and five firefighters are reportedly set to lose their jobs as a result.

The override increases the property tax levy beyond an annual automatic 2.5% increase throughout the state of Massachusetts, according to WCVB. Proposition 2 1/2 restricts the amount of funds a town or city can raise from local property taxes annually to support “municipal operations,” according to the .

In addition, the committee said the Town of Rutland has determined that donations for the event will not be refunded. While some of the funds have been used for event-related expenses, the remaining money will be used to cover future Fourth of July celebrations. All donations are stored in a municipal gift account solely for the town’s Fourth of July celebrations, according to the same letter. While the town’s Fourth of July fireworks, parade, and concert have all been canceled, other events, including a pancake breakfast and a volleyball tournament will continue as planned. The decision to cancel the main events was based exclusively on public safety and was not linked to “funding availability or intended as a response to any community viewpoints,” the committee said.

Rutland resident Carl Boquist reacted to the decision to cancel the event while speaking with CBS News.

“[I’m] massively disappointed. I spent a lot of money already on it. I put a float in the parade every year because my dad did when we were kids. And all my grandkids ride on that float,” he said.

Similarly, Paul Diego Craney, executive director of the watchdog group the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance, labeled the decision as “inexcusable,” according to the Boston Herald.

“These officials pushed for an override vote, lost, and are now extracting political payback by taking away something the town enjoys during the 250th anniversary of the nation’s independence. They are acting this way for political purposes, to get back at the very people they are supposed to serve,” he told the outlet.

July 4, 2026, marks America’s 250th Anniversary, according to the White House website. To mark the occasion, President Donald Trump has formed the Salute to America 250 Task Force with events planned from Memorial Day until the end of the year.

“The White House is engaging all levels of government, the private sector, non-profit and educational institutions, and every citizen across the country to celebrate this historic milestone. To achieve this ambitious vision, we have created a new public-private partnership called Freedom 250,” the White House website indicates.

As part of the festivities, a prayer and worship gathering called Rededicate 250 took place May 17 on the National Mall. The interfaith event featured live music and speeches from political leaders, faith leaders, and media voices.

The Daily Caller contacted the Rutland Fourth of July Committee, but did not receive a comment in time for publication.
