Senate GOP’s Fundraising Arm Ponying Up Funds For Candidate It Trashed In Primaries

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) will fundraise with Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton after previously criticizing him during the Texas Senate primary.

Paxton filed paperwork Monday for a joint fundraising committee with the NRSC in the months leading up to November’s election. The committee repeatedly attacked Paxton when he ran against incumbent Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn, though they deleted the statements when Paxton won the May 26 runoff. The Senate Republicans’ campaign arm removed a statement from July 10 which criticized Paxton’s extramarital affair while married to Republican Texas state Sen. Angela Paxton. Another statement from July 2025 with the header, “Ken Paxton’s Lies and Incompetence Keep Piling Up” is currently a “404” page.

“What Ken Paxton has put his family through is truly repulsive and disgusting. No one should have to endure what Angela Paxton has, and we pray for her as she chooses to stand up for herself and her family during this difficult time,” NRSC communications director Joanna Rodriguez said at the time.

Paxton’s opponents have both largely outpaced him in fundraising. In early May, Cornyn raised over $26 million across his campaign committee and associated committee, while Paxton raised around $8 million, The New York Times reported. The NRSC’s fundraising will help Paxton raise more money than he had been able to previously.

“Republicans are united in our effort to beat ‘God is nonbinary’ James Talarico and secure President Trump’s Senate majority,” NRSC regional press secretary Samantha Cantrell told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Democratic Texas Senate nominee James Talarico has largely outpaced Paxton in fundraising, raising more than $40 million thus far, while Paxton has raised approximately $8.1 million for his Senate run. Paxton’s campaign had approximately $2.3 million on hand as of late May.

Talarico previously said God is “non-binary,” argued the biblical account of Jesus’ conception justified abortion and that he loved transgender children. He told CBS News’ Ed O’Keefe that he had some regrets about some of his previous remarks that he described as being “intentionally provocative.”

Senate Republicans immediately set aside their past differences with Paxton and endorsed him. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, who chairs the NRSC, all endorsed Paxton once he defeated Cornyn.

Thune and Barrasso both backed Cornyn before the primary, with Barrasso telling reporters in March that he “fully” supported Cornyn over Paxton after neither candidate received the necessary amount of votes to become the nominee in the March 3 primary.

“Ken Paxton is our nominee heading into November, and we got to pivot and go all in to make sure that we keep Texas red, that he wins, and that we keep a far-left liberal out of the United States Senate,” Thune told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt.

Scott said in a May 27 statement that while he supported Cornyn, the party must unite behind Paxton to defeat Talarico.
