A Year After Charlie Kirk’s Murder, My Campus Celebrated

There is no compromise with the radical left. My name is Shae McInnis, and I lead the College Republicans at Georgetown University. Last week on the anniversary of Charlie Kirk’s murder, conservative students held a candlelight prayer vigil. Leftist students celebrated. They took to Georgetown’s anonymous online social media platform, Fizz, and posted hundreds of messages celebrating Kirk’s death, planning a Charlie Kirk lookalike contest, and doxxing conservative students. Dozens of posts wished students a “Happy Kirkaversary” and planned parties to celebrate. One post with over 900 upvotes stated, “I want to get an abortion in honor of the kirkaversary.” Another post joked about Kirk burning in hell, writing “My fucking flesh is literally melting off! There is no salvation to be found in the depths of hell,” while another student posted a photo of Kirk’s head attached to an outdoor sprinkling system with water gushing from his neck.

This is nothing new at Georgetown. Last year, just two weeks after Kirk’s murder, posters were displayed all over Georgetown’s campus by the “John Brown Club” which featured the words “Hey Fascist Catch!,” the same slogan written on the shell casings used in Kirk’s assassination. The posters called upon students to “do something more than ceremonial resistance,” and stated that the John Brown Club “celebrated when Nazis die.” Nationwide, 30 percent of college students say that violence is an acceptable way of shutting down speakers on college campuses. This isn’t a fluke, and it shouldn’t be surprising.

Maybe leftist college students are taking inspiration from their national leaders. Over a dozen 2026 Democratic congressional candidates have campaigned or affiliated with popular influencer Hasan Piker, including Michigan U.S. Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed. Hasan Piker has stated to his millions of followers that America deserved 9/11, called for the murder of Senator Rick Scott and for American streets to bathe in capitalist blood, stated that his movement seeks to destroy the white race, and proudly proclaimed that he “wipes his ass” with the Constitution. Piker is a self–proclaimed enemy of the United States.

Conservatives must stop pretending that the radical left is respectable political opposition. Hasan Piker, the candidates who take the stage with him, and the college students who endorse his worldview by celebrating Kirk’s assassination represent existential threats to civil society. Not only can they never be handed power, but their ideas must be eradicated from American political discourse.

Upon taking office, Georgetown’s new president Eduardo Peñalver expressed his desire to reduce political polarization: “My impression is Georgetown is comparatively doing well with that, but it’s not something we can take for granted.” However, reducing polarization is not possible, nor is it even desirable in the face of leftist extremism. When leftists celebrate murder, calls to “reduce polarization” amount to tacit acceptance of their worldview. We need to draw a sharper line between ourselves and those celebrating Kirk’s murder, between those of us who revere the Christian values and political tradition of the West and those who intend to tear it all down. When faced with the political violence of the radical left, there can be no middle ground and no compromise. We must win, and they must lose.

However, it would be naive to characterize celebrations of Charlie Kirk’s horrific murder as merely a political problem without considering the deep spiritual rot that these celebrations point to — the natural result of politics divorced from Christian morality. The foundation of the West’s political order is the notion that all human beings are granted equal dignity under God, and that human dignity cannot be violated in service of political aspirations. But now, as we witness the post-Christian left abandon this foundational pillar of society, their celebration of Kirk’s murder should come as no surprise. To them, Charlie Kirk is not a human being made in the image of God and endowed with inalienable rights, but an obstacle toward their progressive ambitions. When human dignity becomes futile, political violence becomes logical.

It goes without saying that conservatives could never respond in kind to leftist violence. Doing so would betray the essence of conservatism: adherence to God’s eternal principles, what Russell Kirk called the “transcendent moral order.” But it would be equally reckless to grow complacent. Seeing our fellow classmates brazenly celebrate Charlie Kirk’s death should serve as a sobering wake-up call to all conservative students. These attitudes don’t end with Kirk. Any vocal conservative will not be spared in the minds — or by the bullets — of deranged leftists. We must treat this threat accordingly and remain politically vigilant, yet spiritually resolute.
