Autumn Cold Front To Deliver Severe Weather, Lower Temperatures Throughout Northern US

September is when we see the transition from summer to autumn, and a cold front is showing up as scheduled to assist in the shift, delivering lower temperatures and scattered showers as summer begins to give way to the colder seasons ahead.

Autumn-like air along the northern United States will push into the region while paired with thunderstorms. When mid-September arrives, the fall feel could be more widespread as temperature gradients strengthen and assist in fueling a stronger, more southerly jet stream, according to the FOX Forecast Center. Throughout the next week, numerous fall fronts will shift along the U.S.’s Northern Tier.

The initial storm will organize Friday, moving warm, humid air to the north and causing instability to increase, bringing the elements for severe weather.

A Level 2 out of 5 severe storm threat has been issued for the Upper Midwest and Northern Plains for Friday afternoon, which includes major cities that range from Omaha to Minneapolis. The primary threats in this zone will be hail and damaging winds.

Following Friday’s severe weather, more could be on the way for Sunday and Monday as another system enters the region. It’s anticipated that a low-pressure area will strengthen over Canada, leading to the cold front pushing southeastward into the same areas.

Warmer air rich in moisture ahead of the front will energize thunderstorms that have the potential to generate several inches of rainfall.

Through Tuesday, 2 to 3 inches of widespread rain could fall from Wisconsin into Iowa, northern Missouri and eastern Kansas, with isolated totals potentially reaching 3 to 5 inches. Localized flash flooding will also be a threat through early next week.
