Cat Ladies Rejoice! New Feline Species Discovered For First Time In Over 100 Years
The Journal of Current Biology released a paper Thursday announcing the discovery of a new species of cat in Bolivia’s Yungas region. This is the first time in over a hundred years that scientists have discovered a new cat species.

The new species, Leopardus tilcayo, is a species of tiger cat, a type of small wild cat from Latin America. Also called the Tilcayo tiger cat, the species is smaller than the average housecat, weighing only 3 pounds and measuring only 18 inches long. The new species is the fifth tiger cat species discovered in Latin America.
The discovery of the new species is somewhat surprising. A local man took care a member of the species after mistaking it for a domestic kitten. He fed the cat rice, eggs, and noodles. When he realized it was wild, he brought it to the local Senda Verda animal sanctuary.

In the sanctuary, scientists initially believed the animal to be part of a known species. However, Paula Nogales-Ascarrunz, who would co-author the study announcing the discovery of the new cat, noticed that its spots or tail did not match known species. Subsequent genetic testing revealed that the cat was indeed a new species.
It is unclear how many of the new species currently exist. “We really don’t know how many cats are still in the wild,” stated Paula Nogales-Ascarrunz.
