Florida State Fires Athletic Director After Disappointing Labor Day Loss To SMU

Florida State has parted ways with athletic director Michael Alford, according to an announcement Monday from university president Richard McCullough.

The decision arrives at a pivotal moment, with the Seminoles facing mounting pressure over the direction of its marquee football program. (RELATED: James Madison Football Puts Up Historic 87 Points To Tie Record For Most Scored By FBS Team Since 1991)
Bruce Warwick, the Senior Associate Athletics Director, will step in as interim athletic director as the school launches a nationwide search for Alford’s permanent replacement.
“Michael Alford has served the University and our student-athletes with dedication, and we thank him for his contributions to our athletics programs,” said McCullough in a statement, according to ESPN. “As we begin this transition, our focus remains on the success of our teams and continuing to provide every competitive advantage we can to our student-athletes, coaches, and staff.”
I’m a Miami guy, but I can acknowledge that college football isn’t the same without Florida State being an elite program. And when it comes to this McCullough firing, let’s be honest, it was overdue by about 12 months, if not longer.

When you spend your tenure picking public brawls with the ACC, taking on over $400 million in department debt for stadium upgrades and chest-thumping about “standards” — only to watch your flagship football program crater to an embarrassing 8-18 mark since the 2023 season — it’s time to go.
And firing Alford is just the first shoe to drop for the Seminoles; I see the writing on the wall. Mike Norvell better watch his you-know-what as well.
Florida State hits the road to face Alabama this weekend. If the Seminoles get rolled in Tuscaloosa as everyone expects, whoever steps into the athletic director role will be tasked with a coaching search before they’ve even had time to see their new office desk.
FSU clearly wants two things: Money and winning. Norvell better deliver on the latter, or he’s cooked.
