Gamers Can’t Understand How Studio Blew $300 Million On Woke, Ugly, Boring Wolverine Game
Insomniac spent a fortune and handed players a game that beats itself.
The studio behind Sony’s acclaimed “Spider-Man” titles saw a reported development cost north of $300 million on “Marvel’s Wolverine,” a sum that rivals its priciest projects ever, according to GuruGamer. That figure has left buyers confused, since the PlayStation 5 exclusive ships a short, linear campaign rather than the sprawling adventure the price tag suggests.

Reviewers zeroed in on how little the game asks of anyone holding the controller. A glowing “scent trail” guides Logan through every level with no way to switch it off and little freedom to explore alternative paths. Quick-time events carry no penalty for failure, according to GuruGamer, and on-rails motorcycle levels can be beaten without ever touching the controller, as streamers have demonstrated. Critics including SkillUp, Gameranx and IGN blasted the design as patronizing handholding that never trusts player instinct, Thred reported. SkillUp called the release a cautionary tale for other developers in his review.
The scores told the rest. Critics landed in the high 70s with recommendation rates near 70 percent, a bad showing for a first-party Sony exclusive, according to GuruGamer. Players began pulling their pre-orders over a $70 game they said offers no challenge.

The complaints also included the game’s woke design and writing choices. The redesign of Mystique had already been branded “woke as hell” before launch, with detractors accusing the team of being allergic to attractive women, TheGamer reported. Other gamers have criticized the homoerotic overtones of the relationship between Wolverine and Sabertooth.
And then there are the graphics. Videos ridiculing the game’s water and lava animations and comparing them unfavorably to PS2 or even N64 graphics have gone viral on X. Even Domino’s Pizza got in on the mockery.
Insomniac has signaled that it hears the backlash. Community Director James Stevenson said the team has “been 100% listening for the past few days,” according to ixbt.games. Whether any amount of “listening” can salvage this stinker of a game remains to be seen.
