‘Like An Abusive Partner’: AirBnB Hosts Are Melting Down Over Ban On Burdensome Cleaning Requirements

Airbnb’s new rulebook has its own hosts in open revolt.

The company will bar hosts from ordering guests to scrub dishes, pull the bedding or cart trash offsite before they leave, Airbnb stated. The ban covers every reservation booked on or after Nov. 20. Only posted house rules bind a guest now. Anything else a host wants drops to a request the guest may ignore.

Hosts still pick from seven standard rules and may tack on reasonable requests, ABC News reported. The company flags any request that crosses the line and gives the host a chance to appeal. Airbnb pitched the overhaul as a fix for years of guest complaints. (RELATED: Airbnb Finally Cracks Down On Hosts Treating Guests Like A Free Maid Service)

The reaction from Reddit users ran hot. “Airbnb is like an abusive partner,” a user who posts as downsideup9494 wrote. “Lol, they keep hurting you, but you’re not sure you can find anything better, so you stay,” user GalumphingWithGlee replied.

Beneath the jokes sat real objections. The rules could force disabled hosts to stop welcoming guests, Reddit user _Pooka posted. Medically necessary safety precautions now count as requests, which guests are free to ignore.

The change has already landed for some. One host opened the listing editor and found the House Rules section relabeled as Requests, user blankpro wrote. A new character cap flagged the existing rules as nearly 500 characters too long. The host rents three rooms inside an owner-occupied home, where one-size standards fit worst.

Even supportive hosts doubted the company would back them up, according to user Quirky-Acanthaceae94. The platform demands hotel-grade service from hosts yet stays silent when guests smuggle in pets or trample quiet hours.

Money and liability drove others out. User Euphoric-Ad-4871 said the rules empower entitled guests and leave hosts holding every risk. The host closed the booking calendar rather than gamble on a bad stay.

One host promised open retaliation with stripped-down kitchens, lower guest limits and tighter housekeeping windows, according to user Forsaken-Run7725. “These are still my properties and guests will have to follow my requests if they want to stay,” the user wrote.

The user warned the platform would pay for it. “When people like me are gone you’re going to be left with the roach motels and frankly you’ll deserve it,” the user wrote.
