Republican Utah Sen. John Curtis Demands Investigation Of Donald Trump Jr.

Republican Utah Sen. John Curtis called for an investigation into Donald Trump Jr. on Tuesday over a report that a Kremlin-linked Russian oligarch paid for the expenses of his wedding afterparty in the Bahamas.

Curtis wrote a letter to the ranking members of the Judiciary Committee, Sens. Chuck Grassley and Dick Durbin, demanding a probe into “use of presidential family relationships for private financial benefit, preferential treatment, or access by domestic and foreign interests.” He called on the committee to subpoena both President Trump’s eldest son and Hunter Biden, the son of former President Joe Biden, over Hunter’s “substantial business” with Chinese and Ukrainian interests when his father was vice president and pursuing higher office. “A toaster is a wedding gift. A private-island party paid for by a Putin-connected oligarch is something else. Republicans nearly wore out the subpoena machine investigating Hunter Biden’s foreign relationships. We should not unplug it now. ‘Trust us’ was not enough then, and it is not enough now,” Curtis wrote on X.

ProPublica reported earlier in September that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev paid for hundreds of thousands of dollars of Trump Jr.’s Bahamas wedding expenses, including the costs to rent an entire private island and a fireworks show. Kremlev was part of a delegation that accompanied Russian President Vladimir Putin on a trip to China days before the May 24 wedding, according to the outlet.

Curtis noted the Trump family’s profitable cryptocurrency venture (World Liberty Financial (WLF)), Trump Jr.’s investments in defense contractors and his membership on the board of prediction market company Kalshi.

“These reports raise legitimate questions about foreign access to members of a sitting president’s family and whether such relationships can create actual or perceived expectations of favorable treatment,” he wrote. “They also may create expectations of a returned favor that would not be in the best interests of the American people or our allies, and could even create national security vulnerabilities.”

Scrutiny has intensified over the Trump family’s connection to the United Arab Emirates through WLF. Days before Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, UAE National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed al Nahyan backed WLF with an undisclosed $500 million investment. Following the transaction, the Trump administration overturned restrictions established during the Biden presidency on high-tech semiconductor sales. The move allowed designated firms, such as Sheikh Tahnoun’s G42, to acquire chips from U.S. companies. “The country should not have to accept one standard for the family of a Republican president and another for the family of a Democratic president. Nor should congressional oversight begin and end when control of the White House changes hands,” Curtis wrote. “Americans deserve confidence that public institutions serve them— not presidents, political parties, wealthy interests, or members of powerful families.”
