The 2026 MTV VMAs packed serious star power and delivered major moments in music history, but somehow managed to fall flat. Snoop Dogg’s hands-off hosting, the show’s lackluster performances and strange onstage remarks left one glaring question hanging over the entire night: Why can’t they get this right?

The show, held Sunday at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, fumbled before it even began. The broadcast kicked off nearly 30 minutes late due to the Baltimore Ravens vs. Dallas Cowboys NFL game running long. That alone was frustrating for fans, but things quickly went from bad to worse when raw footage leaked on social media before the show even aired.

Viewers who stuck it out were treated to a spectacle filled with messy speeches, awkward performances and a noticeably absent host.

Madonna was the first performer, and she brought Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX and Julia Garner to spice up her routine. She started strong, but not long into the choreographed routine, Madonna appeared unsteady on her feet.

She was nominated for 13 awards and took home seven — but it was a painful process to watch.

Her acceptance speeches were noticeably shaky, marked by awkward remarks, moments of confusion over which award she had won, and difficulty finishing some of her sentences. She called upon others to join her on stage and proceeded to physically lean on them for support.

“First of all I would like to thank my fingers, because I can always count on them,” she said while accepting the Artist of the Year award.

She made an incredibly awkward joke about pulling a laser light out of her ass, then admitted she had forgotten which award she was accepting after winning in the Best Dance category. She lost her train of thought several times over the course of the ceremony.

While sharing the stage with Sabrina Carpenter, Madonna called her out for not responding to her DMs, leaving Carpenter visibly stunned by the unexpected remark.

Sombr managed to derail what should have been a powerful tribute to George Michael’s legacy with a sleepy, half-hearted performance. Lacking both energy and enthusiasm, his muted delivery failed to capture the spirit of the iconic George Michael hits he was tasked with honoring. Snoop Dogg may have been the official host, but his presence was barely felt throughout the night. Beyond a few scripted jokes during his opening monologue, he largely faded into the background, leaving the performances and presenters to carry the show.

There were flashes of fun throughout the night, but they were few and far between in an otherwise sloppy, disjointed show.
