The Athletic Finds Dianna Russini’s Scandalous Relationship With Mike Vrabel To Be In Violation Of Newsroom Standards

The relationship between former The Athletic reporter Dianna Russini and New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was in violation of the outlet’s newsroom standards, according to the findings from a five-month internal investigation into Russini’s work that was published Thursday on The Athletic’s website. “Russini’s relationship with Vrabel was in clear violation of The Athletic’s standards,” wrote The Athletic’s editorial director for standards and editorial quality Mike Semel in the report. “Regardless of whether the relationship was romantic, it was a breach and should have been disclosed.”

In regard to Vrabel coverage from Russini, Semel wrote, “I’ve not found a clear link to conclude that Russini used her platform to help promote Vrabel or help his teams during her time at The Athletic. That said, there are examples of Russini writing glowingly of Vrabel that in hindsight are awkward or even uncomfortable.”

The outlet combed through hundreds of stories, videos and podcast episodes just to arrive at the world’s most baffling non-verdict: she broke the rules, it looks terrible, but trust us, there wasn’t any clear link to intentional bias.
