The president’s remarks come after Cruz was asked during an MSNow interview if the GOP had settled on Vice President JD Vance to run for president in 2028. The Texas Senator said the party had not and that there would be a full discussion about who would run. A day later, Cruz acknowledged on a podcast that he wants to be president.

The Daily Caller asked the president about Cruz teasing a run during an Oval Office press conference on Thursday.

“Ted Cruz keeps teasing a 2028 presidential run. You’ve run against him for president. Do you think he could be president? What’s your reaction to that?” the Caller asked.

“I would say that he’s very talented. He’s a very good friend of mine. I think he might do that. He’s a talented guy,” Trump responded.

Trump has long polled those around him, both publicly and privately, about who should succeed him: Vice President Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

During a recent private Oval Office meeting, the president appeared to have indicated who he wants to run in 2028, according to a Washington Post report.

“At the end of the day, we need to elect JD,” Trump told donors, two people with knowledge of the comments told the outlet.

After the report was published, the president denied the report in the Oval Office to the Daily Caller.

“No… I think he’s great, but we’re way too early to even be thinking about that,” Trump said, acknowledging that he had heard of the Post story.

One source close to the administration told the Caller that, as with Trump’s selection of a vice president, no one will know his choice until he officially says something, and the only person who really knows what he meant and what he is thinking is the president. The source added that behind the scenes, Trump consistently praises the vice president.

The Washington Post reported that, after making the Oval Office comment to donors about Vance, Trump polled guests on Marine One whether Vance or Rubio should run.

“Anyone assuming it’s a lock is just getting way ahead of themselves, or just doesn’t know the president very well,” one official told the Post.
