A ranger writing up a badly parked BMW cracked open an investigation now tied to the deaths of as many as seven women.

The car sat where it should not have on the night of June 19 near Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, and when a federal park ranger approached, he found 44-year-old Eugene Horsch with a woman, according to CBS News. She handed over identification belonging to Blair Tonzelli, who vanished in 2023, NBC10 Philadelphia reported.

Inside the vehicle, the ranger recovered two handguns, roughly $8,000 worth of narcotics, and credentials falsely identifying Horsch as a DEA agent, NBC10 reported. Horsch was booked on firearms, drug and forgery counts, and investigators soon turned to his home, 6abc reported. Searches there turned up concealed spaces holding chemicals, a 55-gallon drum rigged to hoses, a marijuana grow, ballistic evidence and what police called a home laboratory, according to CBS News. Officers also seized more than one million digital images and five urns of cremated remains.

Much of that footage centered on Eugene’s late father, Raymond “R.C.” Horsch, who died in 2025 at 82 and who produced violent fetish films and wrote sadomasochistic books, NBC10 reported. Police say the elder Horsch appears in the videos while his son does not, according to CBS News.

Authorities now believe five missing women are dead, with two others still unaccounted for, according to NBC10. The five are Tonzelli, Amy McHale, Nicole Fusaro, Maribel Fresses and Gabrielle Amarando, 6abc reported.

Deputy Commissioner of Investigations Frank Vanore described one 2017 recording to reporters. “He puts a zip tie around her neck, and she becomes unconscious,” Vanore said, according to ABC News.

Police have recovered no remains proving a homicide happened in the house, NBC10 reported, and detectives are testing the seized chemicals to determine whether they could dissolve human tissue. About 30% of the evidence has been reviewed.
