Trump announced in a Truth Social post that he had a “highly successful discussion” with Putin, stating that Russia would “immediately supply over 300,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel to the American and Global Marketplace.” He added that Russia would supply an additional 500,000 tons in November, “1,000,000 Tons immediately thereafter,” and 3,000,000 tons “within a short period of time.”
“Between our TOTAL CONTROL of the Strait of Hormuz, and this great announcement on Russian Energy,” he wrote, “Diesel Prices for Americans and, indeed, the World, will be COMING DOWN, IN RECORD NUMBERS, AND FAST!”
Trump later addressed reporters outside the White House, lauding the deal and thanking Putin for his cooperation.
“By the way, I think you heard about the oil deal with Russia. That is a big deal, that is massive amounts of oil coming into our country, and I want to thank President Putin, to be honest with you,” Trump said. “We have massive amounts coming into our country and it’s diesel, which is what we want, so thank you.”
A reporter told Trump that Zelenskyy called him “weak” for the deal, prompting the president to ask who made the statement before simply replying “Okay.”
Diesel prices hit a record $6.53 per gallon in late September, marking a historic record and a stark contrast from last year’s $3.69 per gallon. (RELATED: Diesel Hits Record Even As Oil Prices Fall)
Zelenskyy criticized the deal in an X post, stating that any “easing of sanctions against Russia” without a de-escalation agreement “is an obvious weakness.”
“Gifts to Putin will not bring peace or any benefit to the civilized world,” Zelenskyy wrote. “Russia will ‘repay’ the diesel with further terror and perfidy. Allowing Russia to sell petroleum products is an investment in a war that must be ended, not prolonged.”
He concluded that Ukraine relies on the United States to support their “defense of life” and “defense of people in Ukraine,” calling Trump to have a “strong conversation with Russia.”
The president’s relationship with Zelenskyy has been highly contentious since their meeting shortly after the start of his second term, when Trump accused Zelenskyy of “gambling with World War Three.”
