Pavinee Supasirivisan faces murder charges in connection with the death of her ex-husband, 43-year-old Daniel Riva, the New York Post reported, citing Myanmar authorities. She is first answering to an alleged immigration violation, a count that applies to any foreigner accused of breaking the law inside Myanmar, the Associated Press (AP) reported, citing a lawyer familiar with the case. Riva died in May at the Sakura Residence and Hotel in Yangon, where his ex-wife allegedly stabbed him in the head and neck, according to the Post.

Supasirivisan showed up at Kamayut Township Court on Tuesday for a hearing where three prosecution witnesses, immigration officers among them, took the stand, the lawyer anonymously told the AP. The Sakura Residence and Hotel sits roughly a mile from the U.S. Embassy and draws diplomats and foreign business travelers, according to the lawyer. The immigration charge carries six months to five years in prison if found guilty, the AP reported. A murder conviction is reportedly far graver. Riva was raised in East Norwich, New York, according to The Times of London. He built his career fighting international organized crime and held postings in Suriname and East Timor before Yangon. While based in Paramaribo, Suriname’s capital, he served as an assistant regional security officer and Diplomatic Security Service special agent. Special agents target passport and visa fraud along with transnational crime, according to the State Department website. Mourners gathered for his funeral in Oyster Bay, New York, on June 13, multiple outlets reported. The State Department confirmed the death of an employee assigned to the U.S. embassy in Yangon in a statement to The Times but did not release the individual’s name.
