USA Today Columnist Suggests Caitlin Clark Complaining About Fouls Could Get Black Players Lynched

USA Today published a column Wednesday arguing that Caitlin Clark’s complaints to referees about missed foul calls have become “dangerous” for the WNBA’s black players.

The column, titled, “Caitlin Clark’s flopping isn’t just annoying — it’s becoming dangerous,” links the lynching of a 14-year-old black boy, Emmett Till, in the 1950s to Clark’s behavior on the court.

Columnist Nancy Armour opens by inferring that Clark and “her enablers” exaggerated or misrepresented fouls, technicals, and injuries before getting to the core of her argument.

“It shouldn’t need reminding this country has an awful history of Black people being harmed, even killed, in the name of ‘defending’ white women,” Armour wrote. (RELATED: WNBA’s Disrespect Towards Caitlin Clark Just Hit All-Time High)

She then used the story of Emmett Till to support her point. Till was a 14-year-old black boy in the Jim Crow era who was reportedly lynched after being accused of whistling at a white woman.

Expanding on the perceived danger, Armour wrote, “It seems there is a white nationalist faction to Clark’s fandom that is deeply, deeply problematic, made even more so because the WNBA is made up predominantly of Black women, many of them queer.”

She concluded by saying, “There also should be an expectation on Clark to recognize the broader implications of her actions being weaponized.”

In the article, Armour also referenced an incident in which a man lost his job after making a racist comment toward a WNBA player.

The article faced enough backlash to prompt a statement from Armour, in which she called the comparison “inartful” and “lacking context.”

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy was among those who criticized the piece, posting on X: “[Armour] has written the dumbest paragraph not only of my lifetime but in the history of sports,” and adding, “Nancy Armour should be out in a straight jacket and locked up. We can’t have these types of smooth brains roaming freely in society.”
