Dozens Of Christians Killed By Nigeria’s Underestimated Terrorist Group

Over two dozen civilians were killed in a Christian village in Kaduna State, Nigeria, during an early Monday morning attack that appeared to have been carried out by a terrorist group often ignored despite its dangerous reputation.

Just after midnight, a neighborhood in Kamaru was attacked, leaving at least 28 people dead, many of them members of the same families, several others injured, and at least one house and four businesses burned, according to a list of the deceased and injured sent to the Daily Caller by those familiar with the destruction. “Southern Kaduna bleeds heavily again,” the source said, as attacks against Christians and moderate Muslims by jihadists in the region have become the norm. Nine other civilians, including children, had been killed in the same town by the same group in mid-June, Barrister Street News reported.

Research by Christian advocacy group Open Doors estimates that an average of nearly 10 Christians are killed in Nigeria every day.

A member of the nearby community told Nigerian conflict reporter and senior editor of Truth Nigeria Masara Kim that he had been awakened by three hours of gunfire, noting that the military, which Kim said had been “stationed mere feet away,” did not intervene.

His sources said security did not arrive at the “pure Christian community” until after the killing had stopped and that a confrontation between survivors and security forces broke out over the investigation until local clergy stepped in to mediate the conflict. Proper steps were then taken to prepare the victims for burial.

The local said about 29 people were killed, seven were injured, four shops were set ablaze, and confirmed reports that the attackers were Fulani.

The Fulani are a majority-Muslim ethnic group numbering in the millions across the region, with their most radical members making up what is referred to as the Fulani Ethnic Militia (FEM).

Despite being responsible for approximately 44% of civilian killings in Nigeria, the FEM is often overshadowed by the flashier, yet less deadly, combined groups of the Islamic State West Africa Province and Boko Haram.

The FEM has not been designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the Trump administration despite pleas from several Republican congressmen and the administration’s stated of ending the killings of Christians in Africa. Nigeria’s state-sponsored U.S. lobbying efforts also deny that the FEM even exists.

“This should send a clear message to the Trump administration that the Nigerian government is not dealing with the terrorists that are killing Christians,” Judd Saul, head of Truth Nigeria and the Christian advocacy group Equipping the Persecuted, told the Caller. “Someone needs to let Trump know who is responsible for killing the Christians in Nigeria. The Fulani ethnic militia.”

Saul said that, through information gathered by locals tracking the movements of the groups, “Our team issued terror alerts prior to these attacks, yet the Nigerian government once again failed to intervene.”

Yet a Sunday attack in Plateau State, while Christians were attending church, was interrupted by the military, leaving one soldier dead and bringing the death toll in the state to more than 50 since the beginning of June, Kim reported. The Trump administration continues to use economic and political tools to incentivize action from the Nigerian government, while sharing its resources and intelligence with the government to counter the rivals of the FEM.
