ZZ Top Drummer Frank Beard Dead At 77
Frank Beard, longtime drummer for legendary rock band ZZ Top, died Monday at the age of 77.
The band’s founder, Billy F. Gibbons, announced his death on Instagram August 18th.
“Today, Elwood and I lost a great friend and collaborator, and the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas,” he wrote in his heartfelt tribute.
“His signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on top.”

The Fort Bend County Medical Examiner noted that Beard passed away surrounded by his family and loved ones at his ranch in Texas after a stay in hospice, according to TMZ.
It’s unclear how long he was in hospice care.
His cause of death was not disclosed.

With a nod to his bandmate, he wrote, “The band will resume its current The Big One! Tour this weekend with two dates in at Austin City Limits, one of Frank’s favorite venues and in a city that had been something of a second home for him.”

Beard was notably absent from the band’s most recent performances and was replaced by Michael Monahan on the drums.
Beard joined ZZ Top in 1969, and devoted more than five decades with the band, lending his talents to some of their biggest hits, including “La Grange,” “Legs,” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’.”
