Tropical Storm Norbert Develops, Expected To Become Hurricane As It Charges Toward Hawaii

Tropical Storm Norbert developed early Thursday in the Eastern Pacific, making it the basin’s 16th named storm this hurricane season, which has generated three major hurricanes (Category 3+) in the Pacific courtesy of an historic El Niño.

According to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Norbert is generating sustained winds of 45 mph and is moving west at 14 mph.

Tropical Depression Fourteen-E became Tropical Storm Norbert hundreds of miles southwest from the Baja California Peninsula’s southern tip, according to the NHC. (RELATED: Autumn Cold Front To Deliver Severe Weather, Lower Temperatures Throughout Northern US)

The system was designated Tuesday as Invest 96E, and not much later, strengthened into Tropical Depression Fourteen-E.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, Norbert could become a hurricane by Saturday.

“Current long-range forecasts have this system continue to move east and potentially in the direction of Hawaii, but that is over a week and a half away,” the FOX Forecast Center said. “There is plenty of time for forecasts to change and evolve.”

Out of the 16 named storms that have developed in the Eastern and Central Pacific, three have impacted Hawaii, which normally doesn’t see a lot of tropical activity.

Earlier this week, Hurricane Lowell made a rare direct hit on the western islands of the state.

An El Niño that’s strengthening and favorable atmospheric conditions are continuing to provide fuel for a Pacific hurricane season that has been exceptionally active.

Typically, El Niño reduces tropical cyclone activity for the Atlantic, while the Pacific sees more. When it isn’t hurricane season, the rest of the world sees other weather impacts due to the climate pattern.

“Outside of Norbert, there are two other areas to watch, one of which has a high chance of development over the next 7 days situated right around current Tropical Storm Norbert,” said the FOX Forecast Center.
