Man Takes Stroll With Co-Worker. Police Respond To Find Him Dead Under 1,000-Pound Boulder

A Colorado man died this week after a massive boulder broke loose on a riverside trail and pinned him to the ground.

Paul Frasch, of Silverthorne, died June 23 close to the Arkansas River along County Road 371 in Buena Vista, according to the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO). Frasch, 59, and a coworker had finished a delivery for a moving company that employed them and were passing by. Frasch appeared to be heading back up the trail when he knocked rocks loose as he went and ended up crushed, the CCSO said. A boulder that detectives later estimated at no less than half a ton remained atop him when law enforcement reached the scene, according to the agency. Half a ton is equivalent to 1,000 pounds.

A caller reported the accident at roughly 1:40 p.m., telling dispatchers his coworker had been seriously hurt by falling rocks, according to the CCSO. Frasch did not survive his wounds, police said.

The same coworker who phoned for help tried to free Frasch and walked away with minor injuries to his arms, the sheriff’s office said.

The Chaffee County Coroner’s Office took custody of Frasch on-site, and his next of kin was informed of the incident, according to the sheriff’s office. The investigation remained active as of June 24.

The CCSO shared an image of the portion of the trail where the rocks were dislogdged, noting it was taken near the riverbank. The victim was not in the image.
